Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is most commonly done via bus or by car. Several bus companies, including Victory Liner and Genesis Transport, operate frequent trips from terminals in Metro Manila (like Cubao and Pasay) to Baguio City. The journey typically takes about 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic conditions, with fares ranging from PHP 700 to PHP 1,000 for regular or executive classes.

For those who prefer to fly, the nearest major airport is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. From Clark, you can take a bus directly to Baguio City, which adds about 3 to 4 hours to your travel time. Alternatively, you can book flight tickets to Baguio's Loakan Airport, though direct flights are less frequent and may be more expensive.

Driving to Baguio offers flexibility. From Manila, you can take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) towards Tarlac, eventually connecting to the TPLEX and then the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so it's advisable to factor this into your budget. The drive typically takes around 4 to 5 hours without significant traffic.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a pleasant, cool climate year-round, making it a popular destination regardless of the season. However, the coolest months are typically from December to February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to as low as 10-15 degrees Celsius, especially at night. This period is considered peak season, with many local and international tourists flocking to the city.

The "rainy season" in Baguio generally runs from June to October. While this period can bring frequent rainfall, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. For travelers who don't mind occasional showers and prefer a more tranquil visit, this can be an ideal time. The months of March to May offer a transition period with warmer days but still comfortable evenings, making it a good compromise for many visitors.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is renowned for its unique culinary scene, influenced by its highland location and diverse cultural heritage. One dish you absolutely must try is the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish made from chicken or pork, often prepared with a unique method involving beating the meat to tenderize it and release blood, which gives the soup a rich flavor and color. It's a hearty and flavorful introduction to local cuisine.

Another local specialty is the Strawberry Taho, a variation of the classic Filipino snack. Baguio is famous for its fresh strawberries, and the taho here is often infused with strawberry syrup and fresh fruit, offering a delightful sweet treat. You'll find vendors selling this refreshing dessert throughout the city, especially near tourist spots.

For those who enjoy savory dishes, try the Ube Kinampay, a purple yam-based dish that can be prepared in various ways, often as a dessert or a savory side. Also, take advantage of this on the local strawberries themselves, which are often sold fresh at markets like the Baguio City Public Market. Enjoying them by the basketful is a simple yet satisfying experience.

When dining out, explore the local eateries and restaurants that offer these specialties. Many establishments near The Podium Boutique Hotel and in the city center serve authentic Baguio dishes. Trying these local flavors is an integral part of the Baguio experience for any Filipino traveler.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly and respectful local culture. The Igorot people, comprising various ethnic groups, have a rich heritage of craftsmanship, weaving, and traditional practices. When interacting with locals, politeness and respect are highly valued. Learning a few basic phrases in Ilocano or Kankanaey can be appreciated, though English and Tagalog are widely understood.

When it comes to safety, Baguio is generally a safe city for tourists. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like the public market or bus terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. It's also advisable to stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night.

For emergencies, know that the local police can be reached at 911. Having a local SIM card can be helpful for communication. Essential apps for your trip include Google Maps for navigation, Grab for ride-hailing services (though taxis are also readily available and generally metered), and a weather app to stay updated on Baguio's famously changeable climate.

Remember to respect local customs and traditions. For instance, when visiting churches or sacred sites, dress modestly. Being mindful of the environment is also important; Baguio is working towards sustainability, so proper waste disposal and conservation efforts are encouraged.

I got the bronze room and they only provided a complimentary water. I rented a kettle for me to have a coffee in the hotel. Overall stay, the hotel is nice except it does not smell good or fresh inside the room.

We booked the gold suite room that is good for 4 pax. Great discount offered by app but we added 300 pesos per day to be upgraded to an air-conditioned room. Pros: (1) the view will leave you speechless. It will take all your worries, tiredness, and disappointment (of the hotel) away. It's really hard to leave the bed with such a majestic view. (2) make up room service - they will replenish everything you already consumed (shampoo, soap, water, coffee, even toothbrush - this is for long stay only). The room smells really nice when you go back to the hotel. (3) staff - they are kind and always offer help. The front desk staff are very responsive. Ask questions through their email address (4) hot water - consistent hot water from the shower and bathroom. (the hot water in the mini bar is not working.) cons: (1) comfort room - because of the half open door, the floor is always wet. Make sure to call make up room service. (2) sofa bed - this is not a bed but a wood with no cushion at all. You will wake up with sore body. (3) amenities - no hair dryer which is a basic for hotels and a must in baguio city?? The tv is for local stations only. Was not able to use the two tvs in the room. The refrigerator is for drinks only. (4) breakfast - it is buffet but limited options. If you stay for at least three days, you will want to eat breakfast in other place. (5) location - you will have to pay at least 100 pesos for a taxi ride to the session road. Too hassle to drive in baguio so we always have to ride taxis and leave the car in the parking lot. (6) parking space - limited parking space so we decided to just leave the car at the parking lot when we found a space. Will I go back? Maybe I will try the other cheaper rooms with better view.

Booked for a bronze room. Room rate is in between budget to mid range. Room is nice however there are certain portions of the room that needs repainting considering that it is somehow a new hotel. It offers you a nice view of Baguio City and the hotel itself has nice interior design and decorations. The free breakfast is delicious though limited in choices (the typical -silog breakfast). Also, the location is far from the city proper so it is not ideal for those who has no car and plans to tour around baguio city. Nevertheless, taxis pass-by the hotel if you plan to commute. Overall, I had a nice stat at the hotel and will definitely recommend it for future accommodations.

The room is big and spacious and the bedroom is facing the sunrise. I just hope the restaurant is open for room service and for midnight snacks.

Booked the Gold Premium Suite for our family, the bedroom was nice and the view was more than perfect, you can watch the sun rise in the morning and the city lights at night from there. It was very relaxing. 😊 The breakfast buffet was okay, the ambiance of the resto made it better. The staffs were accommodating. I just hope that they'll improve the quality of their sofa bed tho, my sis and I had trouble sleeping because the mattress is too hard. Anyway, two thumbs up for this hotel!! Thank you! We'll surely come back here. ❤

Staff are very accommodating. 👍 Awesome place with a good view of Baguio. Place was clean too. Breakfast was ok. Location is 5-15 minutes away from Session Road by car/taxi. There are convenience stores nearby. If you don't have your own means of transportation, taxis/jeepneys are accessible. Price is worth it; would recommend.

I got the bronze room and they only provided a complimentary water. I rented a kettle for me to have a coffee in the hotel. Overall stay, the hotel is nice except it does not smell good or fresh inside the room.

We had an amazing stay here. The service was great. All hotel staff are accommodating. Will definitely book here on our next stay in Baguio. They offer the best view at a very reasonable price.

We enjoyed our stay here at Podium Boutique Hotel. What I saw in the picture is real and what I really love is the view from our room " amazing" .food is also delicious and big serving. If I am going back to baguio definitely I am staying here again. P.S. don't expect too much regarding to wifi. Better to have your own mobile data, less hassle and stress 🤗

Room was well maintained. Even though there was no A/C and just fan, I had a great sleep. Plus the view was overwhelming especially at their restaurant. Plus it’s just along the main road. From marcos highway.
