Your Travel Guide to Dagupan as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dagupan from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila, the most common way to reach Dagupan is by bus. Several bus companies operate daily trips from major terminals like Cubao and Pasay. The journey typically takes between 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Fares usually range from PHP 500 to PHP 700 for regular air-conditioned buses, offering a budget-friendly option for many. Booking your book flight to Clark or Manila first and then taking a bus is a popular strategy.

Alternatively, you can drive from Manila, which offers more flexibility. The route involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then connecting to the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) and eventually the Urdaneta-Dagupan Road. The drive is approximately 4 to 5 hours, but be prepared for toll fees which can add up. This option is ideal for groups or families who prefer to travel at their own pace and have their own vehicle for exploring Dagupan.

For those coming from other major Philippine cities like Baguio or Ilocos, bus routes are also available, often passing through Dagupan. If flying is your preference, you can book flights to Clark International Airport (CRK) or Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila and then arrange for bus or van transfers to Dagupan. This multi-modal approach allows for greater accessibility regardless of your starting point in the archipelago.

Best Time to Visit Dagupan

Dagupan experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season from November to April, and the wet season from May to October. The dry season generally offers more pleasant weather for outdoor activities, with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it an ideal time for exploring the city and its coastal areas. Temperatures during this period can range from 25°C to 33°C.

The peak tourist season typically aligns with the dry months, especially around the Christmas holidays and the summer months of March to May, when many Filipinos take advantage of school breaks. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation rates, consider visiting during the shoulder months of the dry season, such as November or February. The wet season, while bringing occasional rain, can also offer a more tranquil experience and lush green scenery.

Food and Dining Near Dagupan — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Dagupan is renowned for its culinary offerings, particularly its seafood. Bangus (milkfish) is the undisputed king here, and you must try Dagupan's famous Bonuan Bangus. This locally farmed milkfish is known for its tender, flavorful meat and minimal bones. You can enjoy it grilled, fried, or prepared in various other ways at local eateries and restaurants throughout the city.

Another local delicacy to savor is the Pangasinan empanada. Unlike other regional versions, the Pangasinan empanada is typically filled with longganisa (local sausage), vegetables, and a hard-boiled egg, all encased in a crispy, orange-hued crust. It’s a hearty and delicious snack or light meal that’s perfect for sampling the local flavors.

Don't leave Dagupan without trying their version of puto calasiao. These small, bite-sized rice cakes are soft, slightly sweet, and come in various colors, often served with a side of grated coconut. They are a popular pasalubong (take-home gift) and a delightful treat to enjoy with a cup of coffee or as a sweet ending to a meal.

For those who enjoy a bit of spice and unique flavors, try the dinakdakan. This dish is a variation of sisig, made with grilled pork parts like ears and liver, mixed with onions, chili peppers, and a creamy sauce often made from pig's brain or mayonnaise. It’s a rich and savory dish that showcases the adventurous side of Filipino cuisine.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dagupan

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and warmth. When interacting with locals in Dagupan, a friendly demeanor and respectful attitude go a long way. Learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang araw" (Good day) can be appreciated. Tipping is not mandatory but is often welcomed for exceptional service.

When it comes to safety, Dagupan is generally a safe city for tourists. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. If you encounter any issues, local police can be reached at their emergency hotline, which is typically 911 nationwide.

For navigating Dagupan and staying connected, several apps can be very useful. Google Maps is essential for directions and finding places. Grab is widely used for ride-hailing services, offering a convenient way to get around the city. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are popular among Filipinos. Having these apps on your smartphone will enhance your travel experience.

It was not a perfect stay, but a satisfying one. Among the hotels in the area, it is more secured as it has a free parking inside the premises, with overnight security personnel. Staff are polite and helpful. No schedule of cleaning the room with longer stay. Should improve the AC. Refrigerator is needed for a longer stay. Can increase daily payment.

It was a nice stay but very difficult to sleep. For two nights there was a dog that would bark throughout the night.

This shows and tells how the whole gotel was. When i went to take a shower. The electric waterheater was pouring water from somewhere inside it. I am sure it was not grounded. We left a day early. Just to get a shower
