How to Get to San Leonardo from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to San Leonardo from Manila is quite accessible. The most common method is by bus. The bus journey typically takes around 3 to 4 hours, with fares ranging from PHP 300 to PHP 500, depending on the bus company and service type.

From Cabanatuan City, you can easily find local buses or jeepneys that will take you directly to San Leonardo. These local rides are frequent and affordable, usually costing less than PHP 100. The total travel time from Manila, including the transfer in Cabanatuan, would be approximately 4 to 5 hours. For those who prefer to fly into a closer airport, Clark International Airport (CRK) is an option, though it still requires a bus or van transfer to Nueva Ecija. To secure your travel plans, consider using Traveloka to book flight tickets to Manila or Clark.

If you are driving from Metro Manila, you can take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) towards Tarlac, and finally connect to the Pan-Philippine Highway (also known as Maharlika Highway) heading north towards Cabanatuan. From Cabanatuan, follow signs for San Leonardo. Toll fees can add up, so it's wise to budget for these if you opt for a private vehicle. The drive offers scenic views of the Philippine countryside.

Best Time to Visit San Leonardo

The climate in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija, is tropical, characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering sunny days and lower humidity, making it an ideal period for outdoor activities and exploration. Temperatures during these months can range from the mid-20s to the low 30s Celsius.

The wet season typically occurs from May to October, bringing with it occasional to frequent rainfall. While this period might see some disruptions to outdoor plans due to rain, it also means lush green landscapes and fewer crowds. Food and Dining Near San Leonardo — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Nueva Ecija is complete without sampling its local culinary delights. One must-try is the Batutay Longganisa, a sweet and garlicky native sausage that is a breakfast staple and a popular pasalubong. You can often find this at local markets or specialty food stores in the region, perfect for a flavorful start to your day or to take home.

Another local specialty to look out for is Puto Bumbong, a purple rice cake steamed in bamboo tubes and typically served with grated coconut and muscovado sugar. While more commonly associated with the Christmas season, some eateries might offer it year-round. Its unique texture and sweet, slightly smoky flavor make it a delightful treat.

Nueva Ecija is known for its goat dishes, and a well-prepared Kalderetang Kambing is rich, tender, and packed with flavor from tomatoes, liver spread, and spices. It’s a hearty dish that showcases the region’s agricultural bounty and culinary traditions.

Don't forget to try local versions of Filipino favorites like Adobo and Sinigang, which often have unique regional twists. Exploring the local eateries and carinderias in San Leonardo and nearby towns will offer authentic tastes of Nueva Ecija. These simple, local spots are where you’ll find the most genuine flavors.
