The service we received at Vellago Resort was unmatched. By far, the most top-tier hospitality, accommodations, food, and experience. My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and would undoubtedly go back. The staff were so dedicated and memorable, specifically Bambi and Marl, who will forever live in our hearts as a beautiful addition to our honeymoon memories. Multiple times throughout our stay, I was brought to tears because of the exceptional service and experience. I can not write enough positive attributes. We will forever be grateful for the surreal experience we had here, and there is a very good chance we will go back if the opportunity arises.

Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the quickest way to reach El Nido is by air. Direct flights are available from Manila (MNL) to El Nido Lio Airport (ENI), typically operated by smaller aircraft. These flights offer a scenic journey and significantly reduce travel time, often costing between PHP 5,000 to PHP 10,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. Flights from Cebu (CEB) may also be available, sometimes with a layover.

An alternative, often more budget-friendly option, is to fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) in Palawan. Flights to PPS are more frequent and generally cheaper, with fares ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido town proper. The journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and typically costs between PHP 500 to PHP 800 for a van. This option requires more travel time but can be a significant cost saver for wallet-conscious travelers.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces in Luzon, a combination of bus and ferry services is possible, though this is a very long journey. Buses from Manila to various points in Palawan, followed by ferry connections, can take over 24 hours. While this is the most economical route, it is generally not recommended for those with limited vacation time due to the extensive travel duration. Planning your transport well in advance is crucial, especially during peak travel seasons.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the best time to visit El Nido for most Filipino travelers. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions for island hopping and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, when the weather is most favorable, but crowds are larger, and prices for flights and accommodation tend to be higher.

For those seeking a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices. You might still encounter some rain showers, but they are usually brief and interspersed with sunshine. The period from June to October marks the wet season, characterized by increased rainfall and potential typhoons. While you might find lower prices and fewer tourists during this time, there's a higher chance of weather disruptions affecting tour schedules and travel plans.

Considering these factors, if your priority is maximizing outdoor activities and enjoying the pristine beaches under clear skies, aim for the dry season. However, if you are a budget-conscious traveler or prefer a more tranquil experience, exploring the shoulder months or even the early part of the wet season (with flexibility in your plans) could be rewarding. Always check weather forecasts closer to your travel dates.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

El Nido offers a delightful culinary scene that blends fresh seafood with Filipino flavors. A must-try is the classic Filipino Adobo, whether it's chicken or pork, simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You'll find delicious versions in many local eateries, offering a comforting taste of home. Another staple is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, often made with tamarind broth and your choice of meat or seafood, providing a refreshing contrast to the tropical heat.

For seafood lovers, grilled fish and squid are abundant and incredibly fresh. Many restaurants offer a "catch of the day" where you can select your fish and have it grilled to perfection, often served with a side of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is also a popular choice, featuring raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili – a zesty and flavorful appetizer. Don't forget to try La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, which offers a rich and satisfying meal.

When exploring El Nido, look for local carinderias or small restaurants for authentic Filipino dishes at reasonable prices. Many establishments also offer fresh fruit shakes, made from mangoes, coconuts, and other tropical fruits, which are perfect for cooling down. For a more upscale dining experience, several restaurants along the main beaches and in town offer international cuisine alongside Filipino favorites, catering to diverse palates. Exploring the local food scene is an integral part of the El Nido experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos visiting El Nido will find the local culture warm and welcoming, with a strong emphasis on community and respect for elders. It's customary to greet people politely and to be mindful of local customs, especially when visiting churches or interacting with local communities. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang araw" (Good day) can be appreciated. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, but like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit places. For any emergencies, the local police can be reached at their station in town. It's also advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations. Staying hydrated and using sunscreen is essential due to the tropical climate.

For your trip, consider downloading a few helpful apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is essential for navigation, though offline maps can be useful in areas with spotty signal. A currency converter app can help with budgeting. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. If you plan on booking tours or activities on the go, having the Traveloka app handy will allow you to easily book attraction tickets or find other services.

The ABSOLUTE BEST RESORT we have ever stayed at!! Daisy, Leah, MARTY & all of the staff are AMAZING! The luxury & comfort of the resort were unmatched. We woke every morning to the water view & breakfast on the balcony. We relaxed on the beach, kayaked & snorkeled with provided items. Drinks at sunset with a beautiful dinner set up on the beach was included. 1000/10 recommend to unwind. Perfect honeymoon getaway.

AMAZING!!! The most beautiful place, with comfortable and amazingly decorated rooms. Our room also had a large veranda, which was great for breakfast, sunset, relaxing, anytime of the day! The food and the service were massively beyond expectations. The staff constantly went out of their way to make us comfortable and happy, and the food was delicious. We stayed for four nights and easily could have stayed for another four, or more! Really strongly recommend!!

My husband and I went for our honeymoon and had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. The staff went out of their way to accommodate all our needs and were very kind and hospitable. The resort itself is very small (6 units), eco-friendly, and located in a small jungle on an island. Due to this, it is helpful to go in with a mindset that air conditioning will not be unlimited, there will be bugs, and food is only accessible from the resort itself. We did have to pay additional money, as it was not an all inclusive resort, however, my husband and I enjoyed the rest we got and felt the staff did all they could to help us feel comfortable the entire stay. There are even dogs that allow you to pet and play with them too. When it was just us on the island, they even created a beautiful romantic dinner set up on the beach for us. We went during rainy season but still were able to do a private island hopping tour, relax on the beach, and go into town.

They have a boat that will bring you to the property. It is absolutely beautiful in a perfect location to unwind and get away. The staff are very friendly and try to accommodate every request. However, if you are vegetarian or have any special food requirements, don't stay here. We stayed for 4 nights and could not eat almost anything that the resort provided. The food is very expensive but not very good quality, with extremely limited options for vegetarians. Even if you aren't vegetarian, paying $20-30 USD for a meal (per person) that is sub par at best is not acceptable for a resort with this price tag. Inedible stale muesli for breakfast, and Eden cheese quesadillas? We requested vegetarian food on our first day and by the 4th day they still could not provide. But they charge P800 for a boat ride if you need to go to town for food. We were constantly hungry in a place we paid over $400 a night to stay at. The tours they offer are more than double the price of other places. Other than that, the rooms have an absolutely beautiful view, the staff is very friendly and helpful as much as they can, they clean the rooms daily, and offer a VIP experience. Just be ready to pay a lot for everything, only breakfast is included, you will be isolated from the town so you depend on the resort for everything, which would be fine if they had better food. I will say the drinks are excellent 👌 I want to thank the staff who made our stay as pleasant as they could.

The property is indeed unique and very beautiful. The rooms overlook the sea and the staff are totally charming and cannot do enough for you. That is the wonderful thing for this hotel. The beach is right there and the sea beautiful. But the furniture and bedding needs updating. My only reservation for that. Updating required as our air conditioning did not work.

Well what can I say - this place is fabulous - we were treated like a prince and princess from the moment we arrived. Imagine how you feel approaching a resort with everyone standing waving and waiting for your boat to bring you to shore! Cold towels and a beautiful drink to welcome you. The experience though begins well before this with a private transfer from the airport to the beach and then a launch out to the resort. All smooth and easy. As for the resort .... everyone is just so lovely - beautful people with gorgeous personalities and smiles. We loved our breakfasts each morning on a stunning balcony - plenty of options - we did try most of them. Dinner each night on the beach was magic - all choreographed so no two nights were the same - I am sure they even organised the stunning sunsets. All the staff were outstanding and Herwin especially was a delight - we spent seven nights here and were so relaxed and pampered. Loved every minute and can definitely recommend at stay here at this little slice of paradise.

Our stay was amazing. From the time we stepped off the boat to our own private beach area. The staff was waving and greeted us then took our bags and washed the sand off our feet. We were given a refreshing drink and a cool towel right away. Then we were given a run down of how everything worked there. It was a great way to start our experience with them. The food was awesome. It is a little expensive but it’s to be expected being on an island with only one restaurant. The room was epic. The view was unreal and we took a tour with them with their speed boat which was also well worth it. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet yet beautiful place by the ocean with great views. They will take you to the main island for a few as well so you are not trapped on the island for your entire stay. They accept just cash so make sure you bring enough.

We had an amazing vacation here for 5 nights. The beach view suite was spectacular! Everything was worth every penny. The views, sunsets, snorkeling at your feet, private beach, lemon squash drinks, island private tour, the amazing staff, and our romantic birthday dinner. Thank you to the incredible staff and manager! Hope to be back again and stay a little longer.

Staff was great and very accommodating but the property is very run down. The villa we were in had broken seals so the bugs were constantly in the room. The room was literally full of bugs. Also, transportation was not included in the price. For the price it’s at. Atleast shuffles should’ve been provided. & the restaurant didn’t really have any options.
