Your Travel Guide to Coron as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Coron from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Coron from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air, flying into Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) in Busuanga. Several airlines operate flights daily from Manila (MNL) to Coron. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect prices to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if you manage to find good deals. Booking your book flight early is key to securing better rates.

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer a more scenic, albeit longer, journey, traveling by ferry is an option. Ferries depart from Manila and head to Coron. This sea voyage can take anywhere from 15 to 22 hours, depending on the shipping line and vessel. While it's a much slower mode of transport, it offers a different perspective of the Philippine archipelago. The cost for a ferry ticket is generally more affordable than flying, often ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 one way.

While direct bus services to Coron are not available due to its island nature, if you are traveling from nearby islands or provinces in Palawan, you might utilize bus or van services to reach El Nido or Puerto Princesa, and then take a ferry or van to Coron. For instance, from Puerto Princesa, you can take a van to Coron, a journey that takes approximately 5-6 hours and costs around PHP 600-800. Planning your multi-modal journey carefully is essential for a smooth trip.

Best Time to Visit Coron

The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the prime time to visit Coron. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, which are ideal conditions for island hopping, diving, snorkeling, and exploring the famous lagoons and lakes. The weather is consistently pleasant, making it easier to stick to your planned itinerary without disruptions from inclement weather.

The peak tourist season typically falls between December and April. While the weather is at its best during this period, you can expect larger crowds and higher prices for flights and accommodation. If you prefer a more tranquil experience and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May. These months still offer good weather but with fewer tourists around.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain and occasional typhoons. While you might find lower prices and fewer crowds during this time, travel plans can be significantly impacted by weather disturbances. Boat tours may be canceled due to rough seas, and some activities might be limited. However, for the adventurous traveler who doesn't mind occasional rain showers and seeks a more secluded experience, the wet season can still offer its own charm.

Food and Dining Near Coron — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Palawan is complete without savoring fresh seafood, and Coron offers an abundance of it. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are staples, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Look for local eateries in Coron Town Proper that serve *kinilaw*, a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It's a refreshing dish, perfect for the tropical climate.

Another must-try is *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. In Coron, you can find local versions of this savory soup, often enriched with pork, shrimp, and vegetables. It’s a comforting meal, especially after a long day of exploring or during a cooler evening. Many small eateries and carinderias in town will offer this local favorite.

For those with a sweet tooth, try *Halo-Halo*, a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. This delightful concoction features shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down and indulge. You'll find various versions of Halo-Halo at local restaurants and dessert stalls throughout Coron Town.

Don't forget to sample local Palawan specialties if available. Dishes featuring local ingredients like cashew nuts (often found in cookies or as snacks) are a popular souvenir and treat. Many restaurants also offer Filipino comfort food classics like *Adobo* and *Sinigang*, prepared with a local touch. Exploring the local markets and small eateries will give you the most authentic culinary experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Coron

Coron is a place where local culture is deeply intertwined with the natural environment and the sea. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, so expect warm welcomes. It's polite to greet locals with a smile and a "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening). When visiting churches or local communities, dress modestly out of respect. Tipping is not customary but is always appreciated for exceptional service.

Safety in Coron is generally good, especially in the tourist areas. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets. When going on island tours, always listen to your boat crew's safety instructions, particularly regarding swimming and navigating. For emergencies, the local police number is usually 911 or can be obtained from your hotel.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is crucial for navigating Coron Town and finding your way around. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter locals who speak less English. For booking tours and activities, Traveloka's app is a convenient tool. Additionally, having a ride-hailing app if available in the area, or a local transport app, can be useful for getting around town.

It's also advisable to have offline access to important information, such as hotel bookings and travel itineraries, in case of intermittent internet connectivity. Many apps allow you to download maps and information for offline use. Staying informed and prepared will allow you to fully enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Coron.

So we start with the basic room and end up upgrading. The basic room is decent and I think it perfectly fine and clean but me and my partner just want a bigger room. We are fine with the additional charge for the upgrade but we expected that the room should be even better or cleaner than the basic room. But on the second day I found bugs in the room. I guess they didn’t get a chance to clean it before just giving us the room.

Eveything about the hotel was good the owner has spent alot of money here. Upon arrival the loby smelled of mold. One of the three clocks in loby not working. Hallways smelled like mold. Rooms were nice no refrigorator in rooms. The last thing was the food absolutly horrible. Sorry guys the food is really not good!!! Steak sandwich on menu said us beef. It is not horrible taste no seasoning bread should be griddled. Just typical philippiens cooking no flair at all. Breakfast buffet no bacon (personal favoite). Attention to detail is lacking here over the whole property. I know you probably get alot of comments from people who dont really know. I was an excutive chef in the US for 50 years i worked in all 4 and 5 star hotels and resorts. So i see the little things. Your hotel ha a potential but staff need training and need to open there eyes. Good luck.

- Poor service, whatever you will ask for they cannot provide. If they can you will have to ask multiple times for it. An hour late check-out, an extra card for the room, new batteries to the AC-remote - No No No - Food at the restaurant is crap. Breakfast was actually so bad that we skipped it despite being free of charge and ate it in the town instead. - Room is not what you see in the pictures when you book. Our "Balcony" was om the bottom floor and literally the only thing you could see from it was the neighbours white moldy wall 2-3 meters away. Being wi5hout any sunlight at all it was also a Mosquito paradise, making it completely impossible to stay our there. The housekeeper also let them in during cleaning, so the entire was also filled with mosquitos. In the bathroom a part of the wall was filled with plaster bagworms. The drain in the shower barely worked and flooded the bathroom. - We woke up around 7 am every morning against our woll because of the neighbours and their kids playing indians and cowboys in the hallway for hours. Do yourself a service and just stay away from this hotel.

Der Weg von der Stadt zum Hotel hätte etwas kürzer sein können. Das Frühstück war in Ordnung aber nicht besonders.

Nice hotel located a short tricycle ride outside of Coron Town Proper. Hotel is clean and staff are friendly and very helpful. Outside the hotel there is a tricycle stand and you can rent motorbikes from the hotel so commuting is easy.

Good luck.
