Your Travel Guide to Panglao, Panglao Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Panglao, Panglao Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major cities like Cebu or Davao, the most convenient way to reach Panglao Island is by air. Bohol Panglao International Airport (TAG) serves the island. Direct flights from Manila typically range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the airline and how far in advance you book flight tickets. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

From the airport, you can take a taxi or a pre-arranged van service to your accommodation in Panglao. The journey to most hotels, including Villa del Pueblo, takes about 15 to 20 minutes and usually costs between PHP 500 to PHP 800 for a private car. Tricycle rides are also available for shorter distances or if you are traveling solo and looking for a more budget-friendly option.

Alternatively, you can fly into Tagbilaran City Airport (TAG) if you find better flight deals, though Bohol Panglao International Airport is the primary gateway now. From Tagbilaran City, you would then take a bus or van to Panglao, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour. This option might be slightly more time-consuming but can be more economical if flight prices are high.

Best Time to Visit Panglao, Panglao Island

Panglao Island enjoys a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination. However, the best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking sunny skies and calm seas is generally during the dry season, which runs from December to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and lower humidity, perfect for beach activities and island hopping.

The peak tourist season typically falls between December and February, coinciding with Christmas holidays and the cooler months. During this period, expect higher hotel rates and more crowds. For a balance of good weather and fewer people, consider visiting during the shoulder months of March to May. This period still offers excellent weather conditions for exploring Panglao.

The wet season, from June to November, brings a higher chance of rain, which can sometimes be heavy but often short-lived. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices, it's wise to pack an umbrella and be flexible with your itinerary in case of weather disruptions. Despite the rain, the island remains beautiful and offers a different, often more tranquil, experience.

Food and Dining Near Panglao, Panglao Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Panglao, make sure to indulge in the local culinary scene. A must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the taste of the sea. You can find excellent Kinilaw in local eateries and seafood restaurants across Panglao.

Another local delight is the fresh seafood, often grilled or steamed to perfection. Panglao is surrounded by waters teeming with marine life, so expect to find an abundance of fish, prawns, squid, and lobsters. Many restaurants offer a "paluto" service where you can select your fresh catch from the market and have it cooked according to your preference. This is a characteristic Boholano dining experience.

Don't leave without trying Halo-Halo, the popular Filipino dessert. While available all over the Philippines, enjoying it in a tropical setting like Panglao adds to its charm. This icy concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream is the perfect way to cool down. Look for local carinderias or dedicated dessert shops for an authentic version.

For a taste of something truly local, try the Peanut Kisses, a famous Boholano delicacy. These are crunchy, heart-shaped cookies made from ground peanuts and sugar. They make for a great pasalubong (souvenir) and a delightful snack with coffee. You can usually find them in souvenir shops and local bakeries.

Small quiet place not so far from the beach and restaurants. First we booked for 3 nights and end staying 7 nights in total cause the tranquility of the hotel and friendliness of the staff. Why going to the other resorts to pay exorbitant prices for just being in the Philippines to contribute to the big corporations. I just prefer to help the local people in this way.
