This is an older resort but it's true charm is it's idyllic & rural settings. It is a really good place to unwind. Nite, when I stayed, it was the low season and the main pool was being refurbished. In any case, I really like the non hustle & bustle environment and yes there are many things to do. The front beach is not super great for swimming but it is very interesting because you can walk out during low tide and see the inter-tidal life. Enchanted caves is nearby (bring your swim suit because you can / should go swimming there, and Patar white sand beach is close as well. And there is a huge market in Bolinao where many locals shop. And oh and as an added bonus, there is a chapel on site and I utilized it to pray and study my Bible.

Our stay at Soledad Beach Resort in Patar Beach, Bolinao, was nothing short of incredible! The photos simply don’t do justice to how beautiful and well-maintained this resort is. The value for money is exceptional – we were so impressed that we extended our stay twice! The bed, bedding, and pillows were some of the most comfortable we’ve experienced, making every night a restful one––along with cable TV! The resort boasts three amazing pools (each perfect for a relaxing dip or some fun with family), and there’s no shortage of activities – from billiards to karaoke and ample BBQ facilities for group gatherings. The staff were exceptionally professional, friendly, and always accommodating, ensuring our every need was met. Soledad truly exceeded all expectations, and we can’t wait to return for another relaxing and enjoyable escape. Highly recommend!

Your Travel Guide to Bolinao as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Bolinao from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most travelers originating from Metro Manila, the most common way to reach Bolinao is by bus. Major bus companies operate routes from terminals in Cubao, Quezon City, and Pasay City. The journey is quite extensive, typically taking between 6 to 8 hours, so it’s advisable to choose an overnight trip to maximize your time at the destination.

Bus fares usually range from approximately PHP 800 to PHP 1,200 for a one-way ticket, depending on the company and the type of service (e.g., air-conditioned). Companies like Five Star Bus and Victory Liner are known to ply this route.

If you prefer to fly, the nearest major airports are Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga or Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. From either airport, you would then need to arrange for bus or van transport to Bolinao. For instance, from NAIA, you can take a taxi or bus to one of the major bus terminals in Metro Manila and then board a bus bound for Bolinao.

Booking a book flight to CRK might offer a slightly shorter onward journey to Bolinao compared to NAIA, but it’s essential to compare flight schedules and overall travel time.

For travelers coming from the Visayas or Mindanao, such as Cebu or Davao, flying into NAIA or CRK is the most practical first step. From there, you would follow the same bus or private car arrangements as those coming from Manila. Alternatively, some travelers might consider driving their own vehicle. The route from Manila involves the NLEX and SCTEX, then heading north towards Pangasinan. The total driving time from Manila can be around 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic.

Toll fees can add up, so factor this into your budget.

Best Time to Visit Bolinao

Bolinao, like much of the Philippines, experiences a tropical climate. The dry season, generally from November to April, is considered the best time to visit for most travelers. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, making it ideal for beach activities, exploring caves, and enjoying the outdoors. The seas are typically calmer, which is beneficial for boat trips or swimming.

This period, however, also coincides with peak tourist season, especially around holidays like Christmas, New Year, and Holy Week, meaning more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season, from May to October, brings a higher chance of rainfall, often in the form of afternoon thunderstorms. While this might deter some beach-goers, it can be an excellent time for budget-conscious travelers. Accommodation prices may be lower, and there will be fewer tourists, offering a more tranquil experience. If your itinerary includes visiting the caves or enjoying the local culture, the wet season can still be very enjoyable, provided you are prepared for occasional rain showers.

Always check weather forecasts before and during your trip.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late October to early November or February to March. These periods often offer pleasant weather without the peak season intensity. Ultimately, the best time to visit Bolinao depends on your priorities, whether it’s guaranteed sunshine, fewer people, or the best possible rates.

Food and Dining Near Bolinao — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Bolinaan cuisine is heavily influenced by its coastal location, with fresh seafood being the star of many dishes. One absolute must-try is **Sinigang na Bangus** (milkfish in sour broth). Bolinao is renowned for its high-quality bangus, and a well-prepared sinigang, with its tangy tamarind broth and tender fish, is a comforting and flavorful experience. Look for local eateries that serve this dish fresh, often with a side of steamed rice.

Another local specialty you should seek out is **Dinakdakan**. This dish is a rich and savory appetizer or main course made from grilled pork parts (often ears and belly) mixed with pig’s brain, onions, chili peppers, and vinegar. It has a unique creamy texture and a tangy, spicy kick that is incredibly addictive. While it might sound adventurous, it’s a popular Filipino delicacy and a true taste of the region. Many local carinderias and restaurants will offer this.

Given Bolinao's proximity to the sea, **freshly grilled seafood** is a staple. Whether it’s prawns, squid, or various types of fish, simply grilled over charcoal and served with a dipping sauce of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili, it’s a delightful and straightforward culinary experience. Many beachside restaurants and even some resorts offer this, allowing you to savor the natural flavors of the ocean.

Don't forget to try **Pancit Bolinao**, a local variation of the popular Filipino noodle dish. While specific ingredients can vary, it often features fresh seafood and local vegetables, giving it a distinct regional flavor. It’s a hearty and satisfying meal that showcases the local produce and culinary traditions.

Finally, for a sweet treat, look for local delicacies made from **sweet potato** (kamote). Bolinao is known for its sweet potato harvest, and you might find various desserts or snacks incorporating this versatile ingredient. Enjoying these local flavors is a significant part of the travel experience in Bolinao.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Bolinao

Bolinao is a municipality with a strong sense of community and a culture deeply connected to its natural resources, particularly fishing and agriculture.

The staff were friendly & accommodating! We enjoyed our stay here but I have to be honest, it would have been more enjoyable if the pool is clear. The pool was so cloudy, it looks dirty to me. The bathroom door knobs needs to be changed. Thank you.

Got an electric shock from the valve coming off the water heater. Staff did move my room. Bathroom had mildew. Restaurant was closed hours before staff stated. Other options in the area that are far superior. Happy I switched resorts.
