Your Travel Guide to Santiago as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Santiago from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila, reaching Santiago, Ilocos Sur, involves a significant journey. The most common method is by bus, with several reputable companies operating routes to the Ilocos region. Buses typically depart from terminals in Cubao and Pasay, with travel times ranging from 8 to 10 hours. Fares usually fall between PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, making it a cost-effective option for budget-conscious travelers.

Alternatively, you can opt for air travel to Laoag International Airport (LAO), which is the closest major airport. You can book flight tickets from Manila to Laoag, with prices varying from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, offering flexibility and the chance to explore at your own pace. The journey from Manila typically involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) before connecting to the various national highways leading to Ilocos Sur. The total driving time can be around 8 to 9 hours, excluding stops, and toll fees can add up to approximately PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500 for a round trip.

Best Time to Visit Santiago

The ideal time to visit Santiago, Ilocos Sur, generally falls within the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rainfall, making it perfect for enjoying the beaches like Sabangan Beach and Santiago Cove. The weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius, ideal for outdoor activities and relaxation.

The peak tourist season usually coincides with the dry months, especially around the Christmas holidays and the summer months of March to May. During this period, expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a more tranquil experience and potentially better rates, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or February, when the weather is still favorable but the crowds are thinner.

Food and Dining Near Santiago — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Ilocos Sur, particularly near Santiago, you must try Ilocano cuisine, renowned for its distinct flavors and use of local ingredients. A staple dish is

Pinakbet

, a hearty vegetable stew made with eggplant, bitter melon, okra, string beans, and tomatoes, often flavored with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste). It’s a healthy and delicious way to taste the region's produce.

Another must-try is

Bagnet

, crispy deep-fried pork belly that is a local delicacy. Its crunchy skin and tender meat make it incredibly satisfying, often served with a side of dipping sauce. For something lighter,

Poqui Poqui

, a dish made from mashed eggplants, tomatoes, and eggs, offers a unique vegetarian option that is both flavorful and filling.

Don't leave without sampling

Empanada de Ilocos

, a savory pastry filled with Vigan longganisa (a type of sweet and garlicky sausage), egg, and vegetables. The dough is typically made with rice flour, giving it a distinct texture. You can find these local delights in carinderias and restaurants throughout Santiago and nearby towns, offering an authentic taste of the region.

For seafood lovers, the proximity to the coast means fresh catches are readily available. Look for grilled fish, squid, and other marine delicacies prepared in simple yet delicious ways. Exploring the local eateries will allow you to discover the authentic flavors that make Ilocano food a highlight of any trip to the north.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Santiago

The Ilocano people are known for their resilience, resourcefulness, and strong sense of community. Visitors are generally welcomed with warmth and hospitality. It's polite to greet locals with a friendly "Naimbag nga aldaw" (Good day) and to show respect for elders. Understanding basic Ilocano phrases can enhance your interactions and show appreciation for the local culture.

Santiago, like most tourist destinations in the Philippines, is generally safe for travelers. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid displaying excessive wealth. For any emergencies, local police assistance can be reached through the national emergency hotline.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. For communication, ensure you have messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. If you plan on booking transportation or activities, the Traveloka app is indispensable for finding deals and managing your bookings.

Familiarize yourself with local customs regarding dress code, especially when visiting churches or more traditional communities. Good experience: the hotel was nice, clean and wide standard room. Nice sea view from our veranda. Staffs are polite. Bad side: the buffet area, there were flies and even at the lobby. they should make some way to manage that. The buffet were too expensive for one person. And its all filipino foods but its not that delicious as what i've expected and especially the fruits and salads, twas not fresh. it took some time for checking in. A little bit tired of waiting. because we drove almost 8-12 hours to get there. But over all it was a nice place . Perhaps they can make more water activities to make the guests more enjoy.

Had a great time, good food but would be better if there were more variety in the buffet, also offer a la carte for breakfast. Ok to charge for water sports but use of inflatables in the water should be free for check-in guests
