Your Travel Guide to Laoag City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Laoag City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila and other major Philippine cities, flying is the most efficient way to reach Laoag City. Laoag International Airport (LAO) serves the region, with regular flights operated by carriers like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you plan ahead and use platforms like Traveloka to book flight tickets. Expect fares to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time.

If you prefer a more scenic and budget-friendly journey, bus travel is a viable option. Several reputable bus companies, such as Partas and Florida Bus Lines, offer direct routes to Laoag City from Metro Manila. The trip is considerably longer, usually taking between 9 to 12 hours. Buses depart from terminals in Cubao and Pasay. Ticket prices typically range from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500 for a one-way trip, making it a cost-effective choice for those with more time.

Driving to Laoag City is also possible for those who enjoy road trips. The journey from Manila involves navigating major expressways and national highways, primarily the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and the MacArthur Highway. The total driving distance is approximately 490 kilometers. While offering flexibility, this option requires significant driving time, around 8 to 10 hours without stops, and involves toll fees that can add up. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition for the long drive.

Best Time to Visit Laoag City

The ideal time to visit Laoag City and the Ilocos Norte region is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and pleasant, with lower chances of rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the beaches. Temperatures are moderate, usually ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius, providing comfortable conditions for sightseeing.

The peak tourist season often coincides with the dry months, particularly around the Christmas holidays, New Year, and the Lenten season (March or April). During these periods, expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. For travelers seeking a more relaxed experience and potentially better deals, the shoulder months of November, February, or early March can be excellent choices. The wet season, from May to October, brings occasional typhoons and heavy rains, which might disrupt travel plans, though it also offers lush landscapes and fewer tourists.

Food and Dining Near Laoag City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Ilocos Norte is complete without savoring its distinct culinary heritage. A must-try is the Ilocos Empanada, a savory pastry filled with Vigan longganisa, eggs, and vegetables, all encased in a vibrant orange, crispy dough. You can find authentic versions in local eateries and street food stalls throughout Laoag City. Its unique flavor profile, a mix of salty, savory, and slightly tangy, makes it a beloved Ilocano delicacy.

Another iconic dish is Pinakbet, a hearty vegetable stew made with local produce like eggplant, bitter melon, okra, and string beans, flavored with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste). The Ilocano version is often drier and richer in flavor compared to other regional variations. It’s a healthy and delicious way to taste the bounty of the region, commonly served as a side dish or a main course in local carinderias and restaurants.

For those who enjoy seafood, the region offers fresh catches prepared in various ways. Grilled fish, often marinated in local spices, is a popular choice. You should also try Dinengdeng, a soupy version of Pinakbet that includes fish or meat, offering a different texture and flavor profile. These dishes highlight the fresh ingredients available in the coastal province and are best enjoyed at local dining spots that serve traditional Ilocano fare.

Don't leave without trying Bagnet, crispy deep-fried pork belly that is a true indulgence. Its crunchy exterior and tender, succulent meat make it a favorite among many Filipinos. While it can be found in various parts of the Philippines, the Ilocano preparation often has a distinct crispiness. Many restaurants in Laoag City offer Bagnet as a main dish or as an ingredient in other preparations, providing a satisfying culinary experience for meat lovers.

Filipino travelers visiting Laoag City will find the local culture warm and welcoming, with a strong sense of community and respect for elders. The Ilocano people are known for their industriousness and resilience. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. Learning a few basic Ilocano phrases like "Naimbag nga aldaw" (Good day) can be appreciated. It's also customary to show respect when visiting churches or historical sites.

Safety in Laoag City is generally good, with low crime rates compared to larger urban centers. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas like markets or terminals. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For any emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and it's advisable to have the contact numbers of your hotel and any local friends or acquaintances readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around the city and its attractions. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. The room is good, it is presented as it is in the picture. The thing is, the people who take care of the hotel are not as accommodating as they should be. Their food is not that presentable, there is nothing that can be bought for breakfast like choco, coffee and the like. Other than these, the hotel was good and the ambiance of the room was excellent

Room is huge and can accommodate up to four persons. Exceeds my expectations in terms of the amount I paid. Reception people seems they don't know what they are doing and hoping for a restaurant of their own.

The hotel has 24/7 reception which is good especially when you are coming in the wee hours of the night. When we came in, the receptionist wasn’t aware of our reservation and even asked us to settle our balance which surprised us. I told her it has been paid already. She checked the computer again and let us check in the room. When we came in the room, no toiletries such as soap, shampoos, etc. were provided. We just shrugged it off. Good thing we brought our own. The next morning, we left for the tour and left our baggage in our room. We came back half an hour before 3pm which means we have to pay for the surcharge which is 100/hour. We went to our room to get our things. Unfortunately, there was no electricity in the room. Only in our room which we paid for the surcharge. I called the receptionist and he told me to wait. Few minutes of waiting still no electricity. So we decided to just pack our things and leave. We also didn’t feel safe because there were no guards on duty. 😔

The room is awesomely spacious! Minimalistic and very modern. A good pay, really. They don't have a kitchen, so our free breakfast was a breakfast meal from Jollibee. Not bad actually. Weighing things, we could've paid much more if we ordered our own meals. Hehehe. And you get to choose what time your meals be delivered! Imagine the relief of not having to wake up early to catch the breakfast service. So its a yes for me. 😊👍

For a hotel that has 40 rooms, they don’t have a generator. We were all tired from travelling looking forward to have a good rest. Unfortunately there was a power interruption and we waited for an hour to finally have a good sleep and that was already 1 in the morning! Thinking what if it lasted for hours? Other guests had already packed up and left the hotel but for us we did not have any choice bec they told us that if it is booked with credit/debit card no refund no matter what. For breakfast they only serve fast foods jollibee/chowking.

The room is spacious and clean even the comfort room. However, the hotel staffs are not that friendly and they don't seem approachable. They are a bit shy. Their WiFi is also not good as it does not reach the rooms, it's only available in the lobby. The towels are also thin and small. The location is not along the main road. They don't offer food as well.

The room was clean, just smelled a little weird. It didn't look like a hotel on the inside. Was talking to the night duty guy but he kept on playing on his cellphone while I was asking about breakfast. Hmmm how accommodating. Towels did not smell clean.

Good experience! Love the place. Great location. Near airport and robinsons. Great value for money! Kind staff and the owner as well. The room is spacious and it looks like an expensive hotel yet affordable! Stayed there for 2 nights. The bed is big enough for 2 persons. The shower was great also! Highly recommended! What we like the most was their WiFi connection (Strong and free!)

West Gate Hotel is one tricycle away from Robinsons Laoag so it's very convenient when you need to do a quick grocery trip for supplies. The room looks great and it looked like an expensive room when in fact it's very affordable. The bathroom is spacious and they have a water heater/shower combo. We would just like to suggest adding a foot rug for the bathroom and a trash bin inside the room. The nearest trash bin is located at the end of the hallway.

dirty room, dirty environment, defective heater, with a cockroach, roofs leaking, water enters the room as it rains. Though room is spacious. They do not proprovide comforter only blankets and with extra charge you may request extra blankets.

We were not able to stay at west gate. When we called them to tell that we are on the way. They said that they were already fully booked and they cannot accommodate us. Bad customer service.

Hotel allowed me to check in earlier so that I can leave my things and tour the city. Only one breakfast was served even though I paid for two pax room. The heater in the shower is not working. The room was spacious but price is a bit expensive.

Room is huge and can accommodate up to four persons. Exceeds my expectations in terms of the amount I paid. Reception people seems they don't know what they are doing and hoping for a restaurant of their own.

It was good. The mirror was way up high lol and shower neither cold nor hot. Far from the main road's noise.

Place was good. The room is spacious and clean. I had a decent stay and if I ever get back to Ilocos again, I might still book this.
