I love this place! It's very clean, cosy & homely. I was greeted by the owner, all staff are very friendly, they even invite me for movie night at the rooftop. Location wise very good, in the middle of the peaceful old town, walking distance to the night market & for Muslim just about 200mtr away from the mosque (where you can get the Halal food). They also provide free bicycle (first come firs serve) where you can cycle all the way to the beach. It was a really nice place & would love to come again :)

Choosing the right district within Bo Yang can transform your trip from a simple visit to a deeply immersive exploration of this charming Thai locale.

Mueang Songkhla

This central district is the administrative and commercial heart of Bo Yang, offering a dynamic urban environment with a strong local flavour. For international travellers, Mueang Songkhla provides a genuine glimpse into everyday Thai life, away from the more polished tourist resorts. It’s an area that appeals to independent explorers and those keen on experiencing authentic street food and local markets. The district’s energy is palpable, making it a good starting point for understanding the region's pulse.

Mueang Songkhla is home to significant cultural sites, including the Songkhla National Museum, which offers insights into the region's history and art. The Songkhla Aquarium is also a popular attraction, drawing families and nature enthusiasts. Getting to this area is straightforward, typically involving a transfer from the nearest major airport, with local taxis and ride-sharing services readily available. The district’s accessibility makes it a convenient hub for exploring the wider Bo Yang region and its attractions.

Samila Beach Area

Synonymous with Bo Yang's iconic mermaid statue, the Samila Beach area is the region's most famous coastal stretch. This is where international visitors often envision their Thai beach holiday, with its golden sands and clear waters. The vibe here is laid-back, with a focus on enjoying the seaside, making it ideal for travellers looking to unwind and soak up the sun.

Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and it's advisable to maintain a calm demeanour, as losing one's temper can be seen as disrespectful.

When visiting landmarks like the Songkhla Aquarium or the Songkhla National Museum, remember that these are places of cultural significance. Dress respectfully, and be mindful of noise levels. Photography rules may vary, so always check for signs or ask permission before taking pictures, especially of people. Queuing is generally orderly, and patience is appreciated. Showing respect for local traditions and practices will undoubtedly lead to warmer interactions with the community.

Safety in Bo Yang is generally high, with petty crime being the most common concern, similar to many tourist destinations. It's wise to keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. Always ensure taxis use their meters or agree on a fare beforehand.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in Thailand is 191 for police and 1669 for medical services. For Filipino travellers, the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is the primary point of contact for consular assistance. It's advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and to keep a copy of your passport and visa information separate from the original documents. Staying informed about any advisories from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is also recommended.

Getting to Bo Yang and Getting Around

Getting to Bo Yang and Getting Around

Reaching Bo Yang from the Philippines is typically a two-step process, involving a flight to a major Thai hub like Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi Airport - BKK) or a direct flight to Hat Yai International Airport (HDY), which is the closest major airport to Bo Yang. Flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Hat Yai usually involve a layover, with total travel times ranging from 6 to 10 hours.

The cost for round-trip tickets can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 per person, depending on the season and booking time. From Hat Yai, you can take a bus or taxi to Bo Yang, a journey of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. For those looking to secure their travel plans, it's advisable to book flight tickets well in advance.

Once you arrive in Bo Yang, navigating the region is relatively straightforward, with several transportation options available. Local songthaews (shared pick-up trucks with benches) are a very affordable way to travel between different parts of the city and surrounding areas, acting as a form of public bus. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are also readily available and offer more comfort and direct routes, though they are more expensive than songthaews. For exploring the immediate vicinity of your accommodation or specific attractions, renting a scooter can be an option for experienced riders, but always prioritize safety and ensure you have the necessary permits and insurance.

The best time to visit Bo Yang generally falls within the cooler, drier season, from November to February. During these months, temperatures are more moderate, and rainfall is less frequent, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The shoulder seasons, from March to May (hot season) and September to October (rainy season), can also be good times to visit, potentially offering lower prices and fewer crowds, though you might need to contend with higher temperatures or occasional downpours.

Before you depart for Bo Yang, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). While major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash is essential for markets, street food, and smaller vendors. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is highly recommended for easy data access, enabling the use of navigation apps and ride-sharing services. Essential apps to download include Google Maps, a translation app, and the Grab app for transportation.

Visa Information for Thailand

Visa Requirements for Philippine Passport Holders Entering Thailand

Philippine passport holders enjoy visa-free entry into Thailand for tourism purposes. This allows for stays of up to 30 days per entry when arriving by air, and up to 30 days if arriving via land border checkpoints. It is crucial to ensure your Philippine passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your intended date of departure from Thailand. While visa-free, travellers may be asked to present proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your stay.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival. There are no specific application forms to fill out beforehand for short tourist stays, and no visa fees are charged for this duration. However, immigration officers reserve the right to deny entry if they are not satisfied with the traveller's intentions or documentation. It is always recommended to check the latest regulations with the Royal Thai Embassy in the Philippines or the official Thai Immigration Bureau website before your travel dates, as policies can be subject to change.

While visa-free entry is a significant convenience, it is imperative for all travellers to verify the most current visa regulations directly with Thailand's official immigration authorities or the Royal Thai Embassy in Manila before booking flights. Immigration policies can be updated without prior notice. Confirming your entry requirements ensures a smooth and stress-free journey to Bo Yang and other parts of Thailand, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip.
