Great location and great staff. Room with our private pool was really good. Highly recommend it as I originally booked the plunge pool but realised it was just that - a very shallow body of water so we paid for an upgrade.

We were very pleased to spend four nights in this lovely resort! We loved our big room, everything was super clean. Lots of families but also couples and young people. We were just a few steps away from the beach and you could walk to different beach clubs with plenty of massage spots. 10-15 min walking from Lamai area which was convenient. Nice stay, recommended

Maret: A Thai Island Escape for the Discerning Filipino Traveller

For many Filipinos, Thailand conjures images of bustling Bangkok markets or the serene temples of Chiang Mai. Yet, the archipelago nation offers a different kind of allure, a tropical destination that whispers of sun-drenched beaches and laid-back island vibes. Maret, a vibrant region on one of Thailand's most celebrated islands, presents a compelling alternative for those seeking an international escape that balances relaxation with adventure, all within a manageable budget. It’s a destination that offers a distinct flavour of Thai island life, far from the overwhelming crowds, yet brimming with authentic experiences.

Maret itself is not a monolithic entity; it’s a mosaic of distinct locales, each offering a unique atmosphere. From the lively energy of its main beach areas to more secluded coves and verdant interiors, the region caters to a spectrum of preferences. Understanding these nuances is key to crafting your ideal holiday. Whether you're drawn to the convenience of beachfront resorts or the charm of boutique guesthouses, Maret’s diverse neighbourhoods ensure that your chosen base will significantly shape your overall experience, from the pace of your days to the ease of accessing local attractions.

The value proposition of Maret is particularly attractive to travellers from the Philippines. With an average starting price of just ₱ 436.59 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.4 from over 9,800 guest experiences, Maret stands out as an accessible yet high-quality international destination. This translates to more bang for your buck, allowing Filipino travellers to enjoy a longer stay, indulge in more activities, or simply experience a higher standard of accommodation than might be possible elsewhere, making it a smart choice for those mindful of their travel budget.

The accommodation landscape in Maret mirrors its diverse appeal. You’ll find everything from the well-appointed Centara Life Lamai Resort Samui, offering a touch of luxury and excellent amenities, to the charming and more budget-friendly Am Samui Palace, which consistently garners high praise from its guests. These properties, and many others like them, represent the spectrum of choices available, ensuring that whether you're looking for a full-service resort experience or a more intimate guesthouse, you can book hotel accommodations that perfectly suit your needs and preferences.

Ultimately, Maret is a destination that can resonate with a wide array of international travellers. For those from the United States and Europe, it offers a gateway to Southeast Asian culture with a relaxed, tropical twist, providing a welcome respite from the everyday. Indian travellers will find familiar flavours in its culinary offerings and appreciate the excellent value for money, while those from African nations might discover a unique blend of exoticism and accessibility. Maret promises an enriching journey, tailored to diverse tastes and expectations.

Best Areas to Stay in Maret

Maret, while a region rather than a single city, is comprised of distinct neighbourhoods, each possessing its own unique character and appeal. For international visitors, particularly those from the Philippines, understanding these areas is crucial for selecting the perfect base for their island adventure. Your choice of neighbourhood will influence everything from the proximity to beaches and nightlife to the availability of local eateries and the overall pace of your holiday, ensuring a tailored experience.

Lamai

Lamai is Maret's second-largest beach area, offering a vibrant yet slightly more laid-back atmosphere compared to its more famous neighbour. It's a fantastic choice for travellers who want to be close to the action – with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops – but also appreciate having easier access to natural attractions like the iconic Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks. This area tends to attract a diverse crowd, including many European and Australian travellers who enjoy its lively nightlife and beautiful coastline.

From Lamai, you can easily explore the famous Lamai Night Market for an evening of street food and souvenir shopping. The distinctive Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks are also a short drive away, offering a unique geological wonder. Getting to Lamai from the main international airport serving Maret typically involves a taxi or pre-booked transfer, taking approximately 30-45 minutes. This area provides a great balance for those wanting to book attractions and enjoy local life.

Central Maret Beachfront

This is the heart of Maret's tourist activity, a stretch of coastline renowned for its golden sands and clear waters. It’s an area that buzzes with energy, offering a wide array of beachfront resorts, water sports, and dining options. For travellers from the Philippines seeking a classic tropical holiday experience with all the conveniences at their doorstep, this area is ideal. It’s particularly popular with younger travellers and couples looking for a lively atmosphere and easy access to entertainment.

Staying along Central Maret Beachfront puts you within easy reach of numerous water activities, from snorkelling and diving to jet skiing. The beachfront promenade is lined with restaurants and bars, perfect for enjoying sunset cocktails. While direct public transport to the main airport might be limited, taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available. This area is also a good starting point for exploring nearby islands or taking boat tours, offering a convenient hub for island exploration.

North Maret Coast

For those seeking a more tranquil and upscale experience, the North Maret coast offers a serene escape. This part of the region is characterized by its luxurious resorts, private villas, and a more refined ambiance. It’s an excellent choice for travellers from the US and Europe who prioritize privacy, relaxation, and high-end amenities. The beaches here are often less crowded, providing a peaceful setting for unwinding and enjoying the natural beauty of the island.

The North Maret coast is home to some of the region's most exclusive resorts and offers opportunities for activities like paddleboarding and kayaking in calmer waters. While dining and shopping options might be more concentrated within the resorts, there are still charming local restaurants to discover. Transfer from the airport to this area typically takes around 40-50 minutes by car. It’s a perfect base for those looking for a sophisticated retreat and a slower pace of life.

Inland Maret (Rural Charm)

Venturing slightly inland from the coast reveals a different side of Maret – one of lush greenery, local villages, and a more authentic Thai experience. This area is ideal for travellers who want to escape the tourist hubs and immerse themselves in the local culture, perhaps for a longer stay. It appeals to those who appreciate nature, are interested in local agriculture, or simply seek a peaceful environment away from the beach crowds. It can be particularly appealing to budget-conscious travellers from India and the Philippines.

While not directly on the beach, inland Maret offers access to local markets, temples, and opportunities for exploring the island's interior, such as waterfalls or rubber plantations. It’s a great area for renting a scooter to explore at your own pace. Getting to this area from the airport involves a taxi or private transfer, and once settled, a rented scooter or local taxis are the best ways to get around. This offers a unique perspective on island life, away from the typical tourist trail.

South Maret Peninsula

The southern tip of Maret is known for its dramatic rock formations, including the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, and offers a more rugged, natural beauty. This area is less developed in terms of large resorts and more focused on smaller guesthouses and boutique accommodations, attracting travellers who appreciate natural landscapes and a more adventurous feel. It’s a good option for those who want to explore the island's unique geological features and enjoy quieter beaches.

The main draw here is undoubtedly the Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, which are popular for photos and exploring the coastline. There are also several smaller, less crowded beaches in the vicinity. Dining options are more spread out, often found in local villages or attached to accommodations. Access from the airport is similar to Lamai, taking about 40-50 minutes by car. This area is perfect for travellers seeking natural wonders and a more off-the-beaten-path experience.

The Lamai Night Market is a prime example, transforming into a culinary hub after sunset where you can sample everything from grilled skewers and spicy papaya salad (Som Tum) to sweet mango sticky rice. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food might require a bit more searching, but many establishments are becoming more accommodating, and looking for restaurants that clearly state "Halal" or asking about ingredients can help. Street food stalls often offer simple, delicious options that are naturally Halal-friendly.

The cost of dining in Maret offers excellent value, especially when compared to Western destinations. Street food and meals at local eateries can range from ₱ 100 to ₱ 300 per person. Mid-range restaurants might charge between ₱ 400 to ₱ 800 per meal, while fine dining experiences can go upwards of ₱ 1,500. For travellers from the Philippines, these prices are generally comparable or even more affordable, allowing for generous exploration of the local cuisine without significant budget strain.

When dining in Maret, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically communal, with dishes shared amongst diners. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 10% or a small amount left on the table. It's polite to use your fork and spoon, with the spoon being the primary utensil for eating. Avoid pointing with your feet or stepping over food, as these are considered disrespectful. Familiarizing yourself with these nuances will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable dining experience.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Maret

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for any international visitor in Maret, ensuring a harmonious and enriching travel experience. While Thai culture is generally welcoming, certain etiquette points are crucial for Filipino travellers to be aware of. The Wai, a traditional greeting with palms pressed together, is common, though a polite nod and smile are usually sufficient for tourists. Always dress modestly when visiting temples or more traditional areas, covering shoulders and knees to show respect for sacred sites.

When visiting popular spots like the Lamai Night Market or the Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, maintaining a respectful demeanour is key. At markets, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid aggressive bargaining; a polite negotiation is acceptable. For the Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, while a popular photo spot, remember these are natural formations with local significance, so treat them with care. Queue culture is generally observed, and patience is appreciated. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals.

Safety in Maret is generally good, but standard precautions apply. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or during late-night outings. For transportation, using reputable taxi services or ride-hailing apps like Grab (if available and widely used in Maret) is recommended. Negotiate taxi fares before starting your journey if a meter isn't used. While Maret is relatively safe, it's always wise to have emergency contact numbers readily accessible.

For Filipino travellers, it's important to know emergency procedures. The local emergency number for police and ambulance is typically 191. For tourist-specific assistance, a dedicated tourist police line may be available. The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is the primary point of contact for consular assistance, and it's advisable to note their contact details and operating hours. For any urgent matters or concerns, reaching out to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) might also provide support. Always consider travel insurance for peace of mind.

Once you arrive at Samui Airport, getting to Maret is convenient.
