The shuttle service from the pier was excellent. The resort atmosphere was great, very clean and tidy. There were many photogenic spots, perfect for photogenic lovers. The sea water was clear, the sand was beautiful, with some seashells in some areas. The food was delicious, though the prices were typical for an island. There were many activities available, making it well worth the price.

Best Areas to Stay in Koh Tao

Koh Tao, while an island, is comprised of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of attractions. For international visitors, understanding these areas is crucial to selecting the perfect base for their holiday. Whether you seek the energetic pulse of beach life, the tranquility of secluded bays, or the convenience of proximity to transport hubs, Koh Tao has a district to suit your travel style. Choosing wisely ensures your island experience aligns with your expectations, from the lively Sairee Beach to the serene Thian Og Bay.

Sairee Beach

Sairee Beach is the undisputed heart of Koh Tao's social scene, a long stretch of sand buzzing with activity day and night. This area is particularly appealing to younger travellers, backpackers, and those seeking a lively atmosphere with plenty of bars, restaurants, and dive shops. Its energetic vibe, coupled with stunning sunset views, makes it a popular choice for those who want to be in the centre of the action. The convenience of having everything within walking distance is a major draw for many international visitors.

Getting to Sairee Beach is straightforward, as it's a short taxi or scooter ride from Mae Haad Pier, the main arrival point for ferries. The beach itself is lined with accommodation options, from budget-friendly bungalows to more upscale resorts. While it can be busy, the sheer number of dining choices, from casual beachfront eateries to international cuisine, ensures there's something for every palate. For those looking to explore beyond the sand, this area serves as a good starting point for island tours and activities.

Mae Haad

Mae Haad serves as Koh Tao's primary gateway, home to the main pier where most ferries arrive and depart. This makes it an incredibly convenient location for travellers, especially those on shorter stays or who prefer easy access to transportation. Beyond its transit function, Mae Haad offers a pleasant mix of local life and tourist amenities, with a good selection of shops, restaurants, and dive centres. It provides a more grounded feel compared to the more tourist-centric Sairee Beach.

The area around Mae Haad Pier is dotted with hotels and guesthouses catering to various budgets, from the very affordable to comfortable mid-range options. Visitors here benefit from easy access to boat trips, including those to nearby islands like Koh Nang Yuan. The presence of ATMs, convenience stores, and a variety of dining establishments, including some offering authentic Thai flavours, makes Mae Haad a practical and well-serviced base for exploring the island.

Chalok Baan Kao

Chalok Baan Kao, located on the southern side of Koh Tao, offers a more relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere compared to the bustling Sairee Beach. This bay is known for its shallower, calmer waters, making it ideal for swimming and water activities suitable for all ages. The vibe here is laid-back, with a good selection of restaurants and dive schools that cater to a slightly more mature or family-oriented crowd. It’s a great choice for those seeking a quieter island experience.

While it has its own selection of eateries, it's also easy to venture to other parts of the island for more dining options. For travellers interested in exploring the southern coast or enjoying water sports in a less crowded setting, Chalok Baan Kao is an excellent choice.

Thian Og Bay (Shark Bay)

Reaching Thian Og Bay usually involves a taxi or scooter ride, as it's situated on the southern tip of the island. Accommodation here tends to lean towards resorts and villas that offer a more private and luxurious experience. The bay itself is home to some excellent snorkelling spots, and its relative remoteness means it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. For those looking to book attractions like guided snorkelling tours, this area provides a fantastic starting point.

The laid-back atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for unwinding.

Access to Taa Then Bay is typically by scooter or taxi, as it's located on the western side of the island. Accommodation options here are fewer but often offer stunning sea views and a sense of seclusion. While dining options are more limited compared to busier areas, the available restaurants provide a relaxed setting to enjoy local cuisine. Taa Then Bay is best suited for travellers who prioritize serenity and natural landscapes over bustling nightlife and extensive amenities.

Getting to June Juea Bay is usually done via scooter or taxi from the main ferry terminal at Mae Haad. The bay features a selection of resorts and bungalows, often with beautiful sea views. While dining options might be more limited than in larger tourist hubs, the available restaurants offer a chance to enjoy local dishes in a relaxed environment. What to Eat and Where to Find It in Koh Tao

Koh Tao's culinary scene is a delightful extension of Thailand's world-renowned cuisine, offering fresh seafood, vibrant curries, and zesty salads that tantalize the taste buds. Beyond the ubiquitous Pad Thai and Green Curry, the island offers local specialties influenced by its island setting, often featuring freshly caught fish prepared with aromatic herbs and spices. For international visitors, exploring these authentic flavours is as much a part of the adventure as diving or sunbathing, providing a delicious insight into Thai culture.

The island's dining landscape ranges from bustling street food stalls and local markets to charming beachfront restaurants and upscale eateries. Areas like Sairee Beach and Mae Haad are particularly known for their diverse culinary offerings, catering to a wide array of tastes and budgets. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified options might require a bit more searching, but many restaurants are accommodating and can prepare dishes without pork or with specific ingredients upon request, especially in more tourist-frequented areas.

Dining in Koh Tao offers excellent value for money, especially when compared to Western destinations. Street food and local eateries can provide a filling meal for as little as ₱ 100-200, while mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 300-600 per person for a main course. Even more upscale dining experiences remain relatively affordable, with many international visitors finding the cost of food to be a pleasant surprise, allowing them to sample a wide variety of dishes without significant financial strain.

When dining in Koh Tao, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 10%) being customary. It's polite to wait to be seated, and using your fork and spoon (the spoon is typically held in the right hand for eating) is standard. Be adventurous and try local recommendations; many restaurants are happy to explain dishes and cater to spice preferences, making your culinary journey both enjoyable and informative.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Koh Tao

Understanding and respecting local customs is key to a harmonious visit to Koh Tao. While Thai culture is generally welcoming, certain etiquette points are important for international visitors to observe. For instance, the head is considered sacred, so avoid touching people's heads. Similarly, feet are seen as the lowest part of the body, so never point your feet at people or religious symbols. Showing respect for the monarchy and Buddhist traditions is also paramount, especially when visiting temples or observing local ceremonies.

When visiting popular spots like Sai Nuan Beach or Mae Haad Pier, maintaining a respectful demeanor is appreciated. While beachwear is acceptable on the sand, it's advisable to dress modestly when walking through local villages or entering shops and restaurants away from the immediate beachfront. Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially monks or elders. Queue culture is generally relaxed, but patience and politeness go a long way in ensuring smooth interactions.

Safety in Koh Tao is generally good, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded areas or at night. For transportation, while taxis and motorbike rentals are common, ensure you agree on fares beforehand or use metered taxis where available. While ride-hailing apps like Grab are not as prevalent as in major Thai cities, local transport services are usually reliable. Downloading offline maps and essential travel apps can be very helpful for navigation.

For Filipino travellers, it's important to know emergency contacts. The local tourist police can be a valuable resource. In case of serious emergencies, contact local ambulance services. For consular assistance, the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is the primary point of contact, and it's wise to have their details handy. Considering travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip disruptions is highly recommended for peace of mind. Getting to Koh Tao and Getting Around

Reaching Koh Tao from the Philippines involves a combination of flights, typically requiring a transit in a major hub like Bangkok. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Koh Samui or Surat Thani (the closest mainland airports to Koh Tao) are not common, so expect at least one layover. Flights from Manila to Bangkok (BKK or DMK) are frequent, with numerous carriers offering competitive fares, often starting from around ₱ 8,000-12,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time. From Bangkok, you can take a domestic flight to Surat Thani or Chumphon, followed by a ferry to Koh Tao, or opt for a bus and ferry combination.

Once you arrive at the mainland airports serving Koh Tao, such as Surat Thani or Chumphon, the journey continues via ferry. Several ferry companies operate routes to the island, with travel times varying from 1.5 to 3 hours. The main arrival point in Koh Tao is Mae Haad Pier. Getting around the island itself is relatively easy and affordable. Options include songthaews (shared taxis), motorbike rentals (for experienced riders), and private taxis. For shorter distances within popular areas like Sairee Beach or Mae Haad, walking is often feasible.

The best time to visit Koh Tao generally falls within the dry season, from December to March, offering sunny days and calm seas ideal for diving and beach activities. April and May can be very hot, while the rainy season typically runs from October to November, though showers are often brief. For international travellers, consider that peak seasons often coincide with major holidays in Europe and North America, potentially leading to higher prices and more crowds. Shoulder seasons, like November or April, can offer a good balance of weather and fewer tourists.

Before you depart for Koh Tao, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). While major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash is advisable for smaller vendors and local transport. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for easy data access. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and potentially a ride-hailing app if available in the region. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Thailand to visit Koh Tao, the visa requirements are generally straightforward. As of current regulations, Philippine citizens are typically granted visa-exempt entry into Thailand for tourism purposes, allowing stays of up to 30 days. This exemption simplifies travel planning significantly, as there is no need to apply for a visa in advance through an embassy or visa processing centre. However, it is always prudent to confirm the latest regulations before your travel dates.

When entering Thailand, immigration officials may request proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your stay. While specific amounts can vary, having a reasonable balance in your bank account or carrying some cash is advisable. The minimum passport validity required is typically six months beyond your intended stay. It is crucial to ensure your passport is in good condition and meets these requirements to avoid any issues at immigration.

While the visa exemption is convenient, policies can change. It is highly recommended that all travellers, including those from the Philippines, verify the most current visa and entry requirements with the official immigration bureau of Thailand or the Royal Thai Embassy in the Philippines well before booking their book flight. This proactive step ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey to Koh Tao and other destinations in Thailand.
