I booked this one as a mistake of the Name (Phao Dai “ward” in stead of Phao Dai “resort”) However, the experience I got here still well. They have full basic facilities as expected: hot shower, TV.. The only downside is it locates in the city, not close to any attractions or beach, so no way to watch sunrise or sunset; if you want to enjoy them, you have to take a walk to embankment. Moreover, this hotel is surrounded by bird-nest farms, so you will heard bird sound 24/7 by the speakers, not much from the birds (surprise XD) However, the hotel is quite close to Ha Tien night market, so it’s best for those seeking to fresh seafood and local gourmet. And did I mention the Gym is only 2 minutes from here as well :)) Still worth to try. Personally, I just learned from the local that with this range of price I can have another option from a resort right at Mui Nai beach. Till next time then

Best Areas to Stay in Dong Ho

Dong Ho, while a region of considerable charm, is best explored by understanding its distinct neighbourhoods. Each area possesses its own unique atmosphere, attractions, and suitability for different types of international travellers. Choosing your base wisely within Dong Ho is crucial, as it will significantly influence your daily experiences, from the pace of local life to the ease of accessing key sights and culinary hotspots. What to Eat and Where to Find It in Dong Ho

From succulent grilled fish to flavourful noodle soups and delicate spring rolls, the food scene here is an integral part of the travel experience, promising authentic tastes that are both familiar and excitingly new.

For an authentic taste of Dong Ho, exploring its local markets and food streets is a must. Areas like Binh San and Pháo Đài are likely to host bustling markets where vendors offer a dazzling variety of fresh produce, spices, and prepared foods. Seek out small, family-run eateries and street food stalls for the most genuine culinary encounters. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food might require some research; however, many Vietnamese dishes are naturally Halal-friendly, relying on seafood, vegetables, and chicken. It's advisable to communicate dietary needs clearly, using phrases like "không thịt heo" (no pork) or "Halal" when ordering.

The affordability of food in Dong Ho is a significant draw for international travellers. Street food can be enjoyed for as little as ₱50-₱100 (approximately $1-2 USD), offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱200-₱500 ($4-10 USD) for a substantial meal, while more upscale dining experiences might range from ₱600-₱1,200 ($12-25 USD) per person. This pricing structure is highly favourable for travellers from the US, Europe, and India, allowing for extensive culinary exploration without straining the budget.

When dining in Dong Ho, embracing local customs will enhance your experience. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) being customary. Meal times generally follow a pattern of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with many street food vendors operating throughout the day. It's polite to wait for your host or the eldest person at the table to begin eating. Be adventurous and try local specialties; Vietnamese cuisine is known for its fresh ingredients and healthy preparation methods, making it a delightful and satisfying part of any visit.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Dong Ho

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enriching travel experience in Dong Ho. While Vietnamese culture is generally welcoming, certain etiquette points can help international visitors navigate social interactions with grace. For instance, it's customary to use both hands when giving or receiving items, especially money or business cards, as a sign of respect. When visiting temples or pagodas, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and always remove your shoes before entering. A polite nod or a slight bow is a common greeting, and loud behaviour is generally frowned upon in public spaces.

When exploring Dong Ho's landmarks and neighbourhoods, maintaining respectful behaviour is key. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals, especially in more rural or traditional settings. At religious sites, maintain a quiet demeanour and avoid disturbing worshippers. Queue culture is not as strictly observed as in some Western countries, so patience and politeness are your best allies. Being mindful of personal space and avoiding overly familiar physical contact with strangers is also advisable, as it aligns with local norms of politeness and reserve.

Dong Ho is generally a safe city for international travellers, but standard precautions should always be taken. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded markets or on public transport, where petty theft can occur. For transportation, using reputable taxi companies or ride-hailing apps like Grab (widely available in Vietnam) is recommended to avoid overcharging. Familiarize yourself with the approximate fares for common routes. Having offline maps and translation apps on your smartphone can be invaluable for navigation and communication, especially in areas with limited English speakers.

In case of emergencies, knowing key contact numbers is crucial. The general emergency number in Vietnam is 113 for police and 114 for fire and ambulance services. While there might not be a dedicated tourist police force in every small region, local authorities are generally helpful. For Filipino travellers, it's wise to note the location and contact details of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Vietnam, typically in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, for any consular assistance. Considering travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen events is highly recommended for all international visitors.

Getting to Dong Ho and Getting Around

Reaching Dong Ho from the Philippines is a journey that offers a taste of Southeast Asian travel, typically involving a flight to a major Vietnamese hub followed by a domestic connection or overland travel. Flights from Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Vietnam usually land in Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Hanoi (HAN). From these major airports, travellers can then take a domestic flight to a regional airport closer to Dong Ho, or opt for bus or train services for a more immersive, albeit longer, journey. The total travel time can range from 6 to 12 hours or more, depending on layovers and connections. Booking your book flight in advance is recommended for better fares.

Navigating Dong Ho itself is an adventure, with a mix of transport options available to suit different budgets and preferences. Local buses offer the most economical way to travel between districts, though routes and schedules might be less predictable for tourists. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are readily available and provide a convenient, relatively affordable way to get around, especially for reaching specific attractions or hotels. For shorter distances within neighbourhoods, renting a motorbike can be an option for experienced riders, but caution is advised due to local traffic conditions. Bicycle rentals are also available in some areas, offering a more leisurely pace.

The best time to visit Dong Ho largely depends on your preference for weather and crowd levels. The dry season, typically from December to April, offers pleasant temperatures and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and beach activities. This period often coincides with peak tourist seasons in Vietnam, so expect higher prices and more visitors. The wet season, from May to November, brings higher humidity and occasional rainfall, but also fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation rates, offering a more tranquil experience for those unfazed by the weather.

Before embarking on your trip to Dong Ho, a few pre-departure preparations will ensure a smoother journey. The local currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND), though US Dollars are sometimes accepted in tourist areas; however, it's best to have local currency for smaller purchases and local transport. You can exchange currency at the airport or in major cities. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is highly recommended for affordable data access, essential for navigation and communication. Essential apps to download include Google Maps, a translation app, and the Grab ride-hailing app.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Vietnam to visit Dong Ho, understanding the visa requirements is a crucial first step. As of current regulations, Philippine citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Vietnam for a stay of up to 30 days. This allows for a convenient and straightforward entry process, making Dong Ho an accessible international destination. It is always advisable to check the latest visa policies with the Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as regulations can change.

The visa-free entry for Filipinos typically requires a passport with at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay and a confirmed onward or return ticket. While no specific visa application is needed for stays under 30 days, travellers should be prepared to present their passport and potentially proof of accommodation or sufficient funds upon arrival. It is essential to ensure your passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Always confirm these requirements directly with official sources to avoid any last-minute issues.

While visa-free entry simplifies the process for short stays, it is imperative for all travellers to verify the most current visa regulations with the official immigration authorities of Vietnam or the Vietnamese Embassy in the Philippines well in advance of booking flights or making travel arrangements. Policies can be subject to change, and staying informed ensures a hassle-free entry into Vietnam for your exploration of Dong Ho and its surrounding regions.
