Highly recommended. I used it from Osaka to Kyoto. You have to physically pick it up at the airport; it's hard to find elsewhere. I went from Kansai Airport. Just ask the staff at the train entrance. It's mandatory if you're buying a one-way ticket, but it's expensive. If you're traveling with a family, you have to buy one per person.

I changed my ticket at KIX airport and it was quite easy. Those with chip passports can change it themselves at the machine, but since I have an old passport, I needed to go to the JR office (on a different floor within the airport) to ask for assistance from the staff. Please note that the validity period is calculated by day, meaning if you change it on the morning or evening of the 1st, the pass will only be valid until the end of the 3rd (for example, my pass in the picture is valid from the 27th to the 29th).

The pass was great and helped save money on our transportation costs. Even if we could only use it on JR west lines, there were lots of options to use it around Osaka, as well as when we did day trips to Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. The pass could only be redeemed in Osaka or Shin-Osaka stations, but it was super easy to do.
