Grand old hotel (1896 I think), which was refurbished around 20 years ago. Large, elegant public rooms and the hotel has the potential to be a proper international “5-star” property - but it is not right now.
Stayed 1 night in a Deluxe room. Classic furnishings and decor which looked like it hadn’t been upgraded for 20 years. Carpet was clean enough but heavily worn, especially outside the bathroom. Bed was VERY uncomfortable - which prevented me sleeping - far too soft, or maybe the springs / mattress had collapsed. Wanted a hot bath but the tap water was filthy brown (see picture) and the mechanism to open the plug was broken so the dirty water stayed in the tub overnight - used bottled water for brushing teeth. Lots of dust on the bedside light stands, one of the two reading lights didn’t work at all, and thick dirt on the bathroom radiator control - fully visible when sitting on the loo.
The pool / spa is excellent - spacious and clean, but not included in all room-rates.
Shocked to discover that in the year 2025 the room has no USB sockets at all, and just ONE accessible power socket - at floor level in the corner as far away from the bed as possible. Asked the staff about this but their explanation was “it’s an old building” - yet hotels all over the world, not just expensive ones, have retro-fitted their electrics and sockets elegantly for decades (e.g. sockets on desk-tops, USBs in bedside drawers). I only had a phone and iPad to charge but if I was on a b
