Our stay at Cala Lodge was an absolute delight! What a very special place Francisco and family have created! We loved staying in the Mathilda House. It was perfect for our family of 5, ages 14-82, nestled in the cloud forest with floor to ceiling windows. It was incredible to see wildlife pass by, we felt lucky to be guests in their well-loved and protected forest. We had dreams and conversations with the howler monkeys throughout the night, and agoutis, coatis and diverse birds were easily seen from the living area and rooms. The staff were welcoming and helpful. Our home was clean, spacious, beautifully contemporary, and well-provisioned, and we received quick support when we had needs or questions. Breakfast was delicious and enjoyed with stunning view over the mountains. We loved exploring the trails and talking with other happy travelers. I will recommend Cala Lodge to family and friends and am grateful for the time that we enjoyed there!

Great location and service was excellent.

Very disappointed with how this was handled. During my stay, I raised concerns directly with reception regarding the condition of the room. While housekeeping responded, the actions taken did not fully resolve the issue or restore the quality of stay that was expected. After returning, I submitted a refund request based on the impact the issue had on my experience. The hotel denied the request, stating the matter had been resolved and that complaints made after departure would not be accepted, despite the concern being reported during the stay. What was most frustrating was not just the issue itself, but the lack of accountability and willingness to provide a fair resolution afterward. I hope management reviews how guest concerns are evaluated and focuses more on guest experience rather than simply whether a response was recorded. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would not stay here again.

The was the perfect place to stay in Monteverde. Cala Lodge was in a good location; very quiet and lots of wildlife hanging around. They had a wonderful breakfast and super friendly staff. A few nice restaurants, a market, and bakery within a 5 minute walk.

We left after only one night because the bugs in the room were so bad we got eaten alive. Holes in the screens allowed large beetles into the room and the biting insects were so bad I couldn’t read on my tablet because it attracted the biting insects and my hands the next day were swollen with insect bites. No mosquito nets or fans were in the room to help so we suffered all night and were horribly bit up by the morning. In addition the room door did not stay adequately closed and we had to lodge a sunscreen tube into the crack to stop it from banging all night long. The towels and blankets were frayed and dingy, making me think some of our bites were bed bugs. we did not use the shower because it was so filthy. When we approached the owner about the bugs he was beyond rude, attempted to gaslight us into making it our problem and we received no refund for the additional days we couldn’t stay there. The bad food, and hard beds are hardly worth mentioning compared to the rest of the unpleasantness that was our experience here. I have traveled the world and this was by far my worst hotel experience.

Nice place to stay. Good location, nice breakfast, quiet. A little basic in the rooms and the pillows weren’t great but Would stay again.

Beautiful views and clean accommodations. We really enjoyed our stay here. The breakfast was great, the view was beautiful. We had a car so it was a very short drive into town. The food was delicious. I highly recommend Choco Cafe. We had a great stay at Cala lodge.

The staff were great, what upset us was giving us a small room for one person although I made my reservations 7 months ago for a two bed room. They gave us a room in another hotel close by & next day they gave us a beautiful spacious double bed room. The problem with packing and unpacking in two days trip was inconvenient, they were very apologetic and sorry about it & we were unfortunate that it has to happen to us.

The room, staff and amenities were all 5 stars. We were in the main lodge above the restaurant and got ZERO sleep either night we were there because of the constant banging throughout the night. It was so bad it almost ruined Monteverde for us :(
