What a find this place was. We needed somewhere to stay and shelter from Storm Dave rather than risk the campervan. We were lucky enough to find the family room at the String of Horses. Amazing food in the pub, amazing and super friendly staff, especially the lady who sorted out brownie pieces for my ten year old rather than the Sundae dessert version. The breakfast in the morning, ordered from a menu rather than buffet was delicious with great options. Added bonus was how close the pub was to all the Hadrians Wall forts and activities which we also stumbled across the next day on our way to Scotland. 5 stars, 10/10, if I could give more I would.

This was exactly what we were hoping for in this stay. The rooms were lovely and clean and the bathrooms were modern and fully stocked. The inn itself was charming, the staff so accommodating and the food (both dinner and breakfast) were delicious.

Really lovely. This was exactly what we were looking for as we traveled from London to Edinburgh by car. We wanted a quiet, homey feeling stay in a real country inn. String of Horses was exactly that. Dinner, the rooms, breakfast, the staff were all excellent! Cheers!

Great staff, good good, ample parking, clean tidy room. Shower was low pressure.

Comfy warm bedroom and beds with bath and shower. Lovely staff and good food and choice in the evening and breakfast. Easy parking and nice snug bar area

Fantastic stay. Couldn’t believe Sam recognised us as we’d only been once before several months ago! She is amazing at her job… bright, bubbly & so efficient. Tbh, all of the staff are lovely. Great rooms, very comfy bed & lovely breakfast. Will definitely be back again.

Great place for an overnight stay

Absolutely amazing! We found this little gem quite by chance as a half way stop between Scotland and England! It was a fantastic experience and the charm of the 17th century building as well as the charming staff was absolutely perfect in every way. The food was incredible and quite unexpected!

Very friendly staff. Pleasant room. Lovely, specious en-suite with shelving for our toiletries. Delicious evening meal in the restaurant and generous breakfast. Would recommend.

The staff - special mention for Sam - were helpful and there when needed. I forgot to pack our toothbrushes and we were supplied with them free of charge. The bedroom was small but it's an old coaching inn so many irregularities to be expected. The bathroom was big! Dinner and breakfast were very good and the location is good. Not far to the lake district or borders and very peaceful in a small village.
