Hotel guest service was excellent. Room air conditioning did not work as well as it could. Location is excellent to catch the bus or train. Restaurant staff could have advised breakfast was included with hotel stay as the menu had prices on it.

We stayed in a room on the second floor. The room was big but it was so ridiculously hot. We had booked as had searched for aircon which was apparent in picture and mentioned on reviews. The aircon did not work (or worked v v badly.) When we arrived the room temp was 30 degrees. The best temperature the room got despite having it on the whole time was 26 degrees. It was far too hot for us and particularly my grandchild. The bathroom had no real ventilation, the fan was v much struggling, which meant it was so hot the whole time we were there. We did ask for a second fan (we should have guessed there were issues with the aircon when we had one fan in there.) We received the second but it was dirty and lacking in any kind of power. We also wouldn't recommend for babies, despite it being a family room there were steps to the hotel and even steps to the lift (which struck me as v odd considering it was a lift.) The parking was nearby but v tight. The breakfast staff were v nice and worked incredibly hard. Having to cover the breakfast rush and reception at the same time seems like way too much for any one person. The breakfast was just ok. The beans were wonderful (and I don't usually like beans), the bacon was great, but the mushrooms were v watery. So all in all, I wouldn't recommend for babies/buggies. I wouldn't recommend in the hot weather. However the room size was good, the view from the room was fabulous and the breakfast staff were great.

The hotel is not inspiring on the outside but is well situated for trains, buses and travel to the Isle of Wight. It has the feel of a run-down hotel which is in the process of being up-graded by the present owners. My room had comfortable beds and a newly fitted bathroom but the windows could only be opened a small way as they were blocked by a fire escape staircase immediately outside. The air conditioning unit had seen better days but there was also a fan. Breakfast in the handsome dining room was quite basic with poor quality fruit juices, flavoured yoghurts and jams, etc.

For a historic renovated building I was impressed with how much detail was taken to update and preserve this gem. While the air conditioning didn’t seem to work well we survived the warm room. The entire staff was very friendly and helpful.

I chose this hotel for its convenience to The Hard bus terminus, the Historic Dockyard and Gun Wharf. It’s a little tatty around the edges but quirky. Our basic room was clean, spacious with comfortable beds. During the hot weather we had air conditioning and two very welcome fans. No hair dryer which was unusual but not a real issue. Will definitely return.

Hotel & room in need of updating , furniture tatty and chipped Only ever one member of staff to cover reception & bar.

Great location (bus depot across the street, dockyard and Gunwharf easy walking distance). Private parking (though its a game of Jenga to get in and out of it). Better than average bathroom (for English hotels). Dining room nice. A/C was "under maintenance" on the hottest day of the year else would give 4 stars. Some attempts have been made to make it wheelchair accessible but not really.

The only problem was the elevator does not go the the first floor rooms. Too many stairs with luggage.

This hotel was not good, the most uncomfortable bed and don’t even attempt to open the window because the smell from outside was not good. The shower pressure was awful. Overall not a good stay and will not be returning

A hidden gem in a fantastic location. It doesn't look much from the outside, but this is a great hotel, a 2 minute walk from Gun Wharf and the Historic Dockyard. Friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely stay again and highly recommend

Ideal location close to the train station and local shopping Center/entertainment complex. Very helpful staff, will be booking another stay with them soon

The room was pretty spacey and well lit. I liked the bed and it was clean.

Decent bar although it was quiet when we visited. It did offer a very good selection of drinks

Enjoyed our stay again but we were given our room key at check in (after 3pm) only to arrive at the room to find it had not been cleaned after the previous occupants. This was rectified but still disappointing

Great old hotel. Super location if you are going to the Dockyards. Thin walls, squeaky floors and the carpets need cleaning. Easy parking. Other than that all good.

The welcoming was really nice. The room was clean and spacious and we were allocated a room with a nice view. We did have one or two minor issues which the staff were happy to put right and did so promptly. The breakfast options were just right and no hassle at all. All in all, happy to recommend.

Such a charming building and very kind staff! Just across from Gunwharf Quays, the bus & train station. Super convenient for those coming into or leaving portsmouth via public transport!

Beautiful hotel second time there and we loved it again. Friendly staff, good food, lovely bar and restaurant perfect location for the dockyard.
