The Portland guesthouse is very charming, it was clean and nice, as an old building can be. We never saw any staff, since it is a self serving guesthouse, but has some very nice chats with some of the other guests. The breakfast was basic and with self service, but we found it to be sufficient but not extravangent in any sence of the word. Would I come back for another stay, yes, I would :)

Ideal for an overnight or weekend stay. Room was compact but clean with all the amenities you'd need. We had a very late check in but as everything was key coded and not staffed we had no issues getting to our room. Our welcome email supplied us with all the key codes, we even had a note on the front door to call them if we hadn't received our codes. Its close to the centre of town and bus station and has an open air, spacious car park with good rates right opposite. Would stay there again.

UNABLE TO CLIMB THE STAIRS WITH LUGGAGE AND NEEDED UPDATING

The breakfast menu was fresh and there were enough choices for someone to eat. We were in one of the basement rooms and found it dark. Work was being done on the outside of the building, so lots of scaffolding which blocked a lot of the light. The bed we had was not very comfortable but we did like how quiet it was.

Highly over priced for what you get… it’s a 2 not 1, because its location is okay and the staff is friendly. If you are overweight, don’t bother; rooms are too small! The mattress is probably the most squeaky I’ve ever seen. Squeaks with every single move. No proper chair in the room. Breakfast quality is worse than that at a hostel: Bread from grocery shelves - not freshly baked, only bananas - no other fruit, only Nescafe!!!, no cheese or even yoghurt! A few cereal types, peanut butter, cream chocolate and tea…

Great place to stay if you need to be close but not too close to the town centre. The room was very spacious and had a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was clean and had a great shower, hot and powerful. We asked for alternative milk which was supplied in the breakfast room. If you want to be close to the centre (5 mins walk) then i would recommend the Portland Guest House

Basement room looking onto concrete steps. No housekeeping in room the second day we stayed. Tea, coffee and milk not replenished after first night. Duvet made rustling noise everytime we moved! However the room was quiet.

Great stay

Dreadful communication, I emailed a query 3 days prior to arrival & had no response. The night before arrival I got an email saying I hadn’t paid. I’d not received a request for payment. The payment link was still not sent and on the morning of arrival I got another email saying I’d not paid shortly followed by yet another demand. Eventually they sent the link & I got instructions for entry. I arrived and sent a message asking for a parking permit. No reply for 34 minutes by which time I’d parked in the NCP car park and paid for parking. A couple had been waiting in the rain on the doorstep all the time I was waiting for a reply re parking permits as they hadn’t received entry instructions. I let them in but they still couldn’t get into their room. My room was in the basement. It was clean. You could see through the window to the room next door so curtains had to be shut for privacy. The bed linen looked like it had been sitting in the bottom of the tumble dryer for days as it was so creased & the bottom sheet was ripped in the corner. There were 2 half finished toilet rolls in the bathroom, enough for 1 night but looked like ‘leftovers!’ The attention to detail was definitely lacking. In the morning it was like a herd of elephants above me as the kitchen staff stomped around directly above my room.

Love the Portland Guest House, fantastic location for wide choice of restaurants in the town. The place is always spotless and the staff are so friendly. Entry is now via key box system and breakfast has moved over to Continental only. This still offers a good choice of food and drinks. Defo recommend the place.

Lovely pet friendly place. Tastefully decorated rooms that were spotlessly clean and tidy. The self check in was convenient and worked well. Rooms quite cold at times and vegan options weren't provided at breakfast on at least one of the days, despite me advising the property of my requirements twice in advance of arrival. Would certainly stay again.

Really helpful staff. Bed was very comfortable and slept really well. Parking in car park opposite convenient and easy walk up to racecourse. Breakfast could’ve been a bit better
