The History of Escape Theme Park

ESCAPE is owned and operated by Sim Leisure Group Ltd., a Singapore Exchange-listed theme park designer and builder. Sim Choo Kheng founded the island.

Sim loved climbing trees, throwing friends off with branches, and racing downhill on makeshift bicycles. Memories inspired ESCAPE. In the past, adventure taught life lessons.

Sim’s two-year business assignment in Lam Vien village outside Saigon was a turning point. Sim was reminded of his childhood by village children and adults playing as he did. ESCAPE would provide the most natural form of fun to combat children’s lack of energy from lack of play and disconnection from nature.

ESCAPE was inspired by Sim’s childhood. Sim Leisure’s new international clients rejected this new genre. Penang’s new administration issued an open tender for a 44-acre construction wasteland in Teluk Bahang to help the island’s tourism industry. Sim Leisure won because of ESCAPE’s retro-eco concept.

When no banks would lend ESCAPE money, its euphoria faded. Every bank in the country was skeptical about this retro-ecological concept. Sim funded ESCAPE Phase 1 with his own money because of the delay. In November of that year, Adventure play opened.

The park finished the original design in less than a year instead of two. ESCAPE’s success has won many accolades and proved the world wrong by expanding to many cities.
