Established in 1988, China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited (CEA) is among China’s three major air transportation groups. In 1997, China Eastern Airlines took over China General Aviation and also became first Chinese airline to offer shares on the international market. The airline was listed on New York, Hong Kong, and Shanghai stock markets, becoming the first airline listed on three markets together. Only a year after that, in a joint venture with COSCO, China Eastern Airlines founded China Cargo Airlines. China Yunnan Airlines and China Northwest Airlines merged into China Eastern Airlines in 2003. Regarding the China Eastern Airlines’ stake ownership, the Chinese government owns majority of it. In 2006, it was announced that there’s a possible sale of up to 20% of China Eastern Airlines stake to foreign investors, including Singapore Airlines, Emirates, and Japan Airlines. A year after that, after receiving approval from the State Council of China, Singapore Airlines and Temasek Holdings (holding company that owns 55% of Singapore Airlines) signed a final agreement to buy a combined 24% stake in China Eastern Airlines, with Singapore Airlines owns 15.73% and Temasek Holdings owns 8.27% stake in the airline. On June 2009, it was announced that China Eastern Airlines would merge with Shanghai Airlines. This particular decision was taken to reduce excess competition between the two Shanghai-based carriers while consolidating Shanghai’s status as an international aviation hub. The merger process took approximately nine months and finally completed on February 2010. Since then, China Eastern Airlines has officially become a wholly owned subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines. However, the operation between Shanghai Airlines and China Eastern Airlines remain separate. China Eastern Airlines continues its expansion strategy in 2012, when it was announced that the airline was planning to make a strategic alliance with the Qantas Group to set up Jetstar Hong Kong, a new low cost airline based at Hong Kong International Airport. The operation was going to be commenced in 2013. Both China Eastern Airlines and Qantas Group would hold 50% stake each, representing a total investment of US$198 million. Unfortunately, in 2015, the Hong Kong authority refused to issue operating license to Jetstar Hong Kong. China Eastern Airlines and Qantas announced that the investment had come to an end. In 2014, China Eastern Airlines experienced a 25% fall in earnings from their net profit of 2.38 billion Chinese Yuan in 2013. The reasons behind this fall turned out to be the tougher competition from low-cost airlines and a newly launched high-speed rail network. Still in the same year, China Eastern Airlines introduced a new logo and livery. By the end of 2014, China Eastern Airlines carried 83.08 million domestic and international passengers with an average load factor of 73%. For five years in a row, China Eastern Airlines was recognized as one of the 30 Most Valuable Chinese Brands by WPP. The airline was also honored with the Five-Star Flight Safety Award by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). China Eastern Airlines has also been awarded by several agencies in titles of “Golden Ting Award”, "Golden Bauhinia Award”, Best Public Company”, “World Most Improved Airline”, “Most Popular Airlines in Asia”, etc.
