Honiara is the capital city of the Solomon Islands, located on the north-western coast of Guadalcanal. As of 2017, it had a population of 84,523 people. The name Honiara originates from nagho ni ara which roughly translates as "place of the east wind" or "facing the southeast wind" in one of the Guadalcanal languages. The town has not been widely recognized and little detailed material exists on it. Honiara is situated on the north-western coast of the island of Guadalcanal and contains a seaport at Point Cruz. The Matanikau River flows through the town, past Chinatown, badly influenced by the 2006 riot.
