Ultimate Guide to a Trip in Kranji

Looking to get away from the hustle and bustle in Singapore? Look no further, as tucked away in the northwestern suburb is Kranji, an area known for its serene rurality. Kranji is the perfect escape that you can do either alone, with a significant other, or even with the whole family, especially during a public holiday in Singapore ! What’s so special about Kranji is that aside from being close to nature, you can get plenty of countryside experiences as well as visit historical venues when you’re there.

We do understand that given the current circumstances of the pandemic, it is hard to be able to go on a staycation Singapore with your family. However, since most of the attractions in Kranji are outdoors, it is generally safer. We’ll guide you on how to get to Kranji, places to stay such as Kranji hotels and accommodations that are included as cheap hotels in Singapore, and top things to do when you’re in Kranji. So pull out your pen and start taking notes!

Getting to Kranji

Visiting the countryside might seem like it’s going to take hours. However, going to Kranji is pretty simple. If you have a car or choose to travel by taxi, you’ll get there within 40 minutes from the airport and within 30 minutes from everywhere else. It is certainly the fastest and most effortless way of getting to Kranji. If you can’t take a car, you can take public transportations such as the MRT or the bus.

You can follow the North-South Line to the Kranji MRT Station (NS7). There are also plenty of buses that pass through the Kranji MRT Station. If you’re not sure which bus to take, make sure to ask around. It would be better if you stay at one of the nearby Kranji hotels, where the concierge will help with your traveling needs. If you decide to take public transportation, don’t forget to always follow health protocols and wear your mask. You’ll also likely have to walk a little bit to get to the main attractions. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes, breathable clothes, and traveling light.

Kranji Hotels

There aren’t a lot of accommodations or specific Kranji hotels in the area itself. However, you can certainly stay in one of the nearest Kranji hotels, which is usually around neighboring areas such as Bukit Timah, Queenstown. If you don’t mind staying in a hotel a little further down, you can stay in one of the hotels around Bukit Merah. There are also plenty of other hotels in Singapore which may seem far from Kranji but are near the MRT station so you can just hop on and ride it to Kranji.

However, there is one accommodation that isn’t necessarily a Kranji hotel but more of a villa-type accommodation situated in the area. Have a look!

Gallop Kranji Farm Resort

Location: 10 Neo Tiew Lane 2, Kranji

The Gallop Kranji Farm Resort is a huge family-friendly resort covering over 50,000 square meters. This resort consists of 35 villas that can take up to 8 guests in one villa. It is definitely the perfect place for your family’s staycation since it is labeled as a Clean Accommodation by Traveloka itself.

This Kranji hotel has everything that Kranji has to offer too. Within the area, you’ll find an exquisite seafood restaurant, where the seafood is fresh from the resort’s prawning and fishing farm. You can also enjoy hanging out in the afternoon at their cafe or have late-night drinks at their scenic beer garden.

Don’t worry about being far away from minimarkets or supermarkets, there is a grocery store inside the resort where you can shop for snacks and toiletries. Gallop Kranji Farm Resort is also the only Kranji hotel that provides its own set of activities for you to do. You can visit the World of Birdnest Museum, where you can gain more knowledge on the ins and outs of a bird’s nest. Who knew that you can even eat bird nests and that it has medicinal purposes?

As Kranji is known for its farms, it’s obvious that Gallop Kranji Farm Resort would have its own farm. They have a cutting-edge smart aquaponics farming system that you can learn about in MetroFarm as well as an herbal farm tour in Uncle Tan’s Herbal Garden where you can learn about medicinal plants and herbal remedies. Last but not least, you can try your own hand at fishing at Ah Hua Fishing. This space strives to be a relaxing retreat from the urban life in the city by simply sitting down, enjoying the fresh air while waiting for a fish to catch your bait. If you’re looking to be more active, you can rent a unicycle. Who knew that there was so much to do in a Kranji hotel?

Activities in Kranji

Being in Kranji, you will never be short of activities, which is why we strongly recommend you to spend the night at the nearest Kranji hotel so that you’re not too exhausted when you get home. We’ve sorted out the must-do activities in Kranji that you and your family wouldn’t want to miss!

Birdwatching at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

We’ve talked about learning more about bird nests in the World of Birdnests Museum, but wouldn’t it be great if you could learn about the birds as well? You’re in luck because Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is the right place to do birdwatching. It is Singapore’s first ASEAN heritage park and a popular place for bird watchers because it stood in the perfect area to see migrating birds. You can spot a wide range of species from shorebirds, kingfishers, hornbills migrating from Australia and Siberia from the period of September to March. If you’ve never gone birdwatching before, you can follow the pictorial guides around the reserve to identify the birds that you might stop around the area. As you walk through this impeccable reservation, you can also find other animals, such as crocodiles, lizards, and many more. However, you’ll definitely be walking on muddy terrains, so ensure that you leave your nice shoes at the Kranji hotel that you’re staying in!

Hay Dairies Goat Farm

When you think of the countryside, you think of farms. That is why farm hopping in Kranji is a must! If you think that you won’t need to hop from one farm to another because all farms are the same, you’re heavily mistaken. There are all sorts of farms in Kranji. One of the most famous farms in Kranji is the Hay Dairies Goat Farm that specializes in the production of goat milk. The Hay Dairies Goat Farm is the only goat farm that exists in Singapore, and it’s been running since 1988. It’s certainly a more hands-on experience than if you were to visit the zoo because you can even feed the goats by purchasing a packet of hay and witness the milking process. Come early though, because they only milk the goats from 9:00 to 10:30 AM.

The best part about the Hay Dairies Goat Farm is that you can even purchase fresh goat milk. You can get the original goat milk or the chocolate flavored one, which is available in two sizes, the 200 or 800 milliliters bottle. As the milk is preservative-free, you’ll have to consume it as fast as possible, but best believe that it’ll provide your body with plenty of protein and calcium. Once you’re done with this farm, you can simply hop to other types of farms such as the Nippon Koi Farm, Jurong Frog Farm, and many more!

KF1 Karting Circuit

Birdwatching, farm hopping, enjoying nature... These seem very slow-paced, right? If you prefer a more adrenaline-pumping kind of activity, you need to visit the KFI Karting Circuit. The KFI Karting Circuit is Singapore’s largest go-kart circuit located just a few steps away from the Kranji MRT Station. That’s right, it means that wherever you’re staying, whether it’s at one of the nearby Kranji hotels or anywhere else in Singapore, you can just take the MRT to get here! It’s one of the most conveniently located attraction sites in Kranji.

You can directly book a ride on their website or show up. However, keep in mind that there is a queue system between the type of karts to ensure that every guest gets enough time to ride their go-karts. There’s also a general rule of having to be a minimum of 140 cm tall if you want to go for a go-kart ride. They do not provide double-seater karts, so you’ll have to ride alone. If you’re bringing along children who aren’t old enough to ride, they can safely watch you from the sidelines. We promise it’ll be just as exhilarating for them as it is for you! Guests are also advised to wear covered shoes, comfortable pants, and most importantly-wear masks.

Kranji Marshes

Kranji Marshes is not only deemed as a flora and fauna sanctuary in Singapore, but it is also the ideal place to take Instagrammable photos! It is one of the largest sanctuaries in Singapore built in the 1970s, which houses hundreds of creatures such as birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and lizards. Venturing through this 56.8-hectare wide marshland located in the northwestern part of the Kranji Reservoir is surely an adventure in itself, so make sure to book one of the park’s guided tours, as some of the parts in this area are restricted. You wouldn’t wanna miss any part of this place! Plus, a guided tour will ensure that you get the most out of this legendary nature reserve since they’ll take you to the most scenic areas and let you know every fun fact about the surrounding area.

The 10-meter Raptor Tower is not to be missed. This tower is going to give you the luminous sunlight you need for that Insta-worthy shot. You can take a snap of the surrounding freshwater marshes, or you can even zoom in to see the Sungei Buloh Water Reserve. You’ll notice that there’s a stretch of forests when you’re at the top of the Raptor Tower, which is actually the Neo Tiew Woods that is the natural habitat of hawks and eagles. If you’re lucky, you can even find marsh birds and reptiles in the shallows. Once you’re done with your tour at the marshland, you can head to the Kranji Reservoir Park nearby to take an afternoon stroll along the Kranji Walk. The park offers a spectacular view of the Straits of Johor, which is the Malaysian shoreline.

Farm to Table Dining

After or in the middle of your Kranji adventure, it’s important to fill your tummy with good food so that it’ll keep you energized. What’s better than farm-to-table cuisine in the countryside? In Kranji, you’ll find plenty of restaurants that use ingredients straight from their own farms. One of the most popular restaurants is Bistro by Gardenasia. Bistro by Gardenasia is owned by one of the oldest family-run companies in Singapore, so they are best known for their authenticity and quality of fresh produce. The bistro itself is situated in a wooden hut overlooking a man-made fish pond. Their farm-fresh ingredients are turned into exquisite meals, such as their winning pan-roasted lamb rack with mint sauce, Pacific catch seafood platter, to local delights such as their Gardenasia fish soup. Your tastebuds will feel like an explosion of fireworks.

Another countryside bistro experience worth mentioning is the Bollywood Veggies. It is the first countryside bistro in Singapore that began opening its doors in 2004. Don’t be fooled, this isn’t just any countryside bistro. Bollywood Veggies offers activities including a 30-minute discovery harvest, a guided farm tour, and even an indoor culinary class. When you’re finally ready to eat, you can head to the Poison Ivy Bistro for their wholesome farm-to-table meals such as their signature banana bread. If you’ve fallen in love with the food, surely you’ll want to take the ingredients back home. You can do this by visiting the Earth Shop, featuring seasonal produce and herbs from Bollywood Veggies as well as neighboring farms. So, grab a shopping bag and ensure that the Kranji hotel that you’re staying in has a fridge!

See how fun it would be to spend a holiday with your family? You won’t even worry about the staycation, because Kranji is such a convenient place for everything. Don’t forget to check out the Traveloka App to find the perfect Kranji hotel for your stay that is both accommodating and cheap, as Traveloka always has plenty of hotel promotions in Singapore.
