Average hotel in the heart of Thai cowboy country
Khoo Yai Cowboy resort is a mile or so from the National Park entrance (farang must pay TEN times the Thai price !). We arrived at dusk and couldn't really be bothered to look for anything else, it looked interesting, a Thai cowboy themed hotel. This area is the heart of cowboy country, up in the hilly uplands of Khao Yai (i cannot bring myself to describe it as a mountain). It is a very attractive part of Thailand, very well developped for tourism, mainly catering for weekenders from Bangkok and a few farangs. I was expecting a Disneyland type room, full of swing doors, cattle prods, spurs, but the room was just a standard Thai motel type room, slightly below average, dull with little redeeming features. Nothing to say it was cowboy hotel ! The hotel reception was themed however and the restaurant on the main road. The cowboy resort consists of several buildings, maybe they were full during peak period weekends, but we stayed in low (monsson) season during the week. There were 4 semi detached motel buildings, and we were allocated one next to the only other guests. They could have easily have given us a separate building ! But NO !
The price was 1200 baht , which is a FORTUNE for such a place in Thailand, but it was now dark, and Khao Yai IS more expensive than the surrounding areas, it is true. But there are MUCH MUCH better bargains to be had, particularly if you travel mid week and low season. I later found that Palio hote in the Italiante village 5 miles down the road has some good bargains out of season, the same price , but MUCH higher quality and in the beautiful Palio village.
We ate the hotel restaurant, i expected the worst and i was NOT disappointed. Thai food is normally delicious, but at the cowboy restaurant, it was "Juud", lacking in flavour and looked poor too. You have to try REALLY hard to eat badly in Thailand, this place was poor.
The main hotel building was occupied by a seminar. The same people descended into the restaurant in the morning and hoovered up all the breakfast items on the small table. Well, i say ALL, there was only 1 choice, the ubiquitous Thai breakfast pork porridge. My girlfriend then told me, i could have a farang breakfast if i liked, specially cooked for us. This was OK, but the drinks were poor.
Maybe it was because it was low season, i don't know, but i thought that this place was poor value and poor quality. Tourists especially with kids will be attracted to it because of the cowboy theme, but there are MANY resorts in Khao Yai, with much better deals, and better quality. I would try to look for a room before you go, or go early and look at the various resorts. This one is just plain poor !
One more thing , there was a swimming pool, it was being filled with water when we were there, it looked OK !
