Not a bad place if you stay in the new pool villa's
We came through here late at night and decided to spend the night. We had one of the pool villa rooms. It was a little pricey but worth the stay because no one else was staying in the pool villas so we had it all to ourselves. We were there on a Friday so the live band was playing that night which was entertaining. The Thai food was delicious as well as some of the Western food. We didn't try the steak fearing it would be thin cut and over cooked. Would probably check out another hotel in the area next time to compare.

Brand new swimming pool is a hidden gem
This is an old style cowboy resort. Our family stayed in a 2 bedroom chalet. Everything was functional. The unsung gem of the resort is a brand new swimming pool complex replacing the old plastic lined pool. We stayed on a Friday night and a live band played English and Thai songs, as we sat on the veranda. Breakfast is served in the Steak House. A limited breakfast offering may have been due our visit post New Year.

Value for money
For the price I paid I can't complain very much. Room was a bit dark but very clean. The whole place really made us feel like living in wild west. During our stay there was a cowboy festival, there was funfair and live performance. Was a nice experience. Not sure if this event is weekly or not but definitely make your stay there more interesting.

Average hotel in the heart of Thai cowboy country
Khoo Yai Cowboy resort is a mile or so from the National Park entrance (farang must pay TEN times the Thai price !). We arrived at dusk and couldn't really be bothered to look for anything else, it looked interesting, a Thai cowboy themed hotel. This area is the heart of cowboy country, up in the hilly uplands of Khao Yai (i cannot bring myself to describe it as a mountain). It is a very attractive part of Thailand, very well developped for tourism, mainly catering for weekenders from Bangkok and a few farangs. I was expecting a Disneyland type room, full of swing doors, cattle prods, spurs, but the room was just a standard Thai motel type room, slightly below average, dull with little redeeming features. Nothing to say it was cowboy hotel ! The hotel reception was themed however and the restaurant on the main road. The cowboy resort consists of several buildings, maybe they were full during peak period weekends, but we stayed in low (monsson) season during the week. There were 4 semi detached motel buildings, and we were allocated one next to the only other guests. They could have easily have given us a separate building ! But NO ! The price was 1200 baht , which is a FORTUNE for such a place in Thailand, but it was now dark, and Khao Yai IS more expensive than the surrounding areas, it is true. But there are MUCH MUCH better bargains to be had, particularly if you travel mid week and low season. I later found that Palio hote in the Italiante village 5 miles down the road has some good bargains out of season, the same price , but MUCH higher quality and in the beautiful Palio village. We ate the hotel restaurant, i expected the worst and i was NOT disappointed. Thai food is normally delicious, but at the cowboy restaurant, it was "Juud", lacking in flavour and looked poor too. You have to try REALLY hard to eat badly in Thailand, this place was poor. The main hotel building was occupied by a seminar. The same people descended into the restaurant in the morning and hoovered up all the breakfast items on the small table. Well, i say ALL, there was only 1 choice, the ubiquitous Thai breakfast pork porridge. My girlfriend then told me, i could have a farang breakfast if i liked, specially cooked for us. This was OK, but the drinks were poor. Maybe it was because it was low season, i don't know, but i thought that this place was poor value and poor quality. Tourists especially with kids will be attracted to it because of the cowboy theme, but there are MANY resorts in Khao Yai, with much better deals, and better quality. I would try to look for a room before you go, or go early and look at the various resorts. This one is just plain poor ! One more thing , there was a swimming pool, it was being filled with water when we were there, it looked OK !
