In Need of TLC
Having spent over eight years continuously on the road in rented accommodation, ranging from hotels to apartments to hostels and much in between, we think we have a good idea of what to look for in reserving a bed for the night.
Unless otherwise stated, assume the reviewed accommodation to have the following facilities: in-room internet connection for personal laptop, air conditioning, TV with English speaking channels, fridge and a safe.
We stayed here for three nights and it was ideal due to the very close proximity to old friends we were visiting in.
After checking in and paying up front for our stay we were then advised that our budget room could not, after all, receive a wi-fi signal as advertised, because the router was broken. Erm, so buy another one and fix it? I get the feeling it has long been out of action and this excuse is trotted out readily. Not the best of starts.
Our room was a short walk away and opened with large patio doors. On entering we immediately noticed numerous mosquitoes and eventually managed to eliminate a dozen or so with plenty more avoiding our finest attempts. I find this unacceptable and Housekeeping should at least have sprayed the room down to clear it of pests.
It was a big room but while perhaps “clean” gave the impression it wasn’t. Plenty of ring marks on surfaces, a lime scaled shower hose, cheap and nasty shower curtain with missing hooks and discolouration. These are not high costs items to rectify, all it would take is a new hose and shower curtain and immediately the bathroom would have improved ten-fold. A rail or holder would also be quite novel as we had nowhere to hang towels except off the door knob.
The safe was roomy, the bed mattress had springs (in Thailand? Give me a firm, foam mattress any day), the lighting was fine and staff readily brought up an extra pillows on request. Enough storage space, a CRT TV (with limited channels) but good air conditioning and the fridge was adequate if occasionally a little noisy.
Breakfast looked OK (we don’t bother) as did the pool, but overall it needs work undertaking to get up to a better standard.
All in all a reasonable budget hotel, fine for a short stay.
