We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful hotel. Everything available on site, but also very easy walking distance to Funchal centre. All of the staff were extremely helpful & friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was wonderful & breakfast was a delicious choice of fresh & cooked food. We would highly recommend this hotel & will definitely be back. It was my partners birthday while we were in Madeira & despite us not announcing this in any way, he was presented with a birthday cake & a bottle of wine, which was a lovely surprise, thank you so much

This was our third stay here at Quintinha São João. It really feels like the most wonderful home away from home rather than a hotel. You're made to feel so welcome and looked after by the most dedicated and friendly staff. I can't imagine anywhere else in Funchal coming even close to this place. And it's all mostly because of the staff too. They can't do enough for you. Everyone from the reception staff to the serving staff to the cleaners and the spa staff made us once again feel so welcomed and went out of their way when it came to being of assistance to us. A special shout out is due to the restaurant staff, especially during breakfast time. The buffet is constantly topped up with fresh food and they're super fast with your coffee/tea and non-buffet orders. I'm sure we will be back for a fourth visit to Madeira in a year or two and needless to say that we will stay here. The loveliest hotel I've ever stayed in anywhere. It feels so odd to call it a hotel because I really do see it as my other home!

Very pleasant hotel with generous room sizes and scenic views. Friendly, helpful staff and conveniently located a 15-minute walk from the town centre and the ferry terminal.

In my opinion, the facilities are not five stars, but the service is superb. Everyone tries very hard to make your stay great.

this hotel was beautiful! so much is included in your stay (plenty of the spa services, the games room, the cabinets of books on each floor, the first round of tea/coffee/fridge things in the room, the courtesy buses), and the staff are all so friendly. we quickly realised how lucky we got by choosing this hotel as it was in such a convenient spot (bus stop just up the road, and driving back from town centre would take 5 mins at the most). the only suggestions for improvement, however, are: 1. the smell of the sheets (perhaps more a general problem with dry cleaning than the hotel) as they smelled a little musty even when changed, and sometimes the hoovering wasn't very thorough. used things were, nonetheless, always replaced without fail (used glasses/towels etc.). 2. the lack of knowledge of dietary requirements other than vegetarian/vegan. this is definitely across Madeira, that nobody really knows what halal is unfortunately. but hotels are a big industry so if they knew about it, it might make a difference across the island, like normalising halal butchers or not using pig fat in desserts, etc. having said that, the restaurant staff are extremely helpful - as soon as one of them found out we can't eat the meat/alcohol, he made sure we steered clear of menu items that contained them or asked the chef for alternatives. so we really appreciated that. Madeira isn't very racially/religiously diverse so the friendliness of the staff really made all the difference :)

The stay here was wonderful. The receptionist when we arrived was super welcoming and showed us around really professionally. Everyone we spoke to was really nice and couldn't have done more. We loved our trip to Madeira and had the most incredible holiday, and a lot of this was because we got to come back to Quintinha Sao João in the evenings. The food in their restaurant by the way was also incredible and a really good price for what you get. We also felt very welcomed as a gay couple and didn't feel like we being treated differently to anyone else, which we of course really appreciate. This is the first holiday in a while where I can safely say that I'll be returning soon!

Excellent service, beautiful garden views and great breakfast. The only negative was that the hotel was a bit dated and just in the middle of refurbishment(outside?).

The staff were so lovely and their service was excellent. The condition of the building and decor could do with some updating, it is very tired.

The property is very quiet, even if it is still walking distance to the city center, and you can fell the charm of a boutique hotel. The staff is friendly and super helpful, and I really felt like I was at home. The room was very spacious, comfortable and had this lovely balcony overlooking the gardens. The breakfast had a great variety, and the lunch we had by the pool was delicious! I recommend everyone to try on of the cocktails at the bar. The Passion Fruit Mojito is unbelievable! I will definitely stay there again in my next trip to Madeira!

DO NOT COME‼️‼️⛔⛔⛔⛔ This place is a border line fraud. It might be a 5star Motel, NOT a 5 star Hotel. I also, fell into the trap of good reviews on Google maps and Hotels.com. Their photographer should get a pulitzer prize because the hotel does NOT look like the photos. We booked 5 nights and left after 2 nights because it was SO bad. They did not want to refund anything but the stay was so horrible we left even if it meant loosing a ~3 nights/~600$. Just some of the nuggets we had during our stay: -The place is OLD and not in a good way. Furniture and all infrastructure are have not been updated since hotel was built (90s?). They did zero upgrades since. - Nothing to eat for breakfast. Better food in McDonald's breakfast. No food for vegan people - we come to 5star places because they accommodate for all kinds of food restrictions - not this place (their response - "sorry. Chef is not here today" - what??) - last day room smelled like a sewer. I'm not exaggerating. Real, strong, distinct sewer smell like in a dark water treatment facility - AC from the 80s. Makes noises at night. You have a choice: stop sweating or sleep - dogs and wolves crying each night outside of the window at 1AM (I admit, not their fault) - only met one nice staff person throughout the whole stay - all furniture, tiles in bathroom, shower taps - everything is in old or broken state. You can't cover up sh*tty upkeep and call it an "old style hotel" Great 3star hotel, not 5!

About a 10 minute walk to seafront quite steep walk the old town where it is best to eat is another 10 minutes on the flat. The hotel staff are so very friendly, the rooms are comfortable and very clean. I would recommend this hotel

Lovely and quiet hotel. Great customer service. Delicious breakfast and very impressive and reasonably-priced cocktails. Really like the flexible happy hour. Massage was excellent, but water should be available for guests using the sauna, jacuzzi and hamam as these can be very dehydrating. The indoor pool isn’t sufficiently heated either. It would be nice if the following could be included as complimentary items in the room or even upon request: iron, teas and coffees with kettle, sanitising wipes.
