The property location is great, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. However , there was a noise from the hot water system (possibly)which switched on and off throughout the night. It made for a very disturbed sleep. The dining room was cold because the roof vents could not be closed. A shame because it could be great, and the staff are a delight

We did not really enjoy our stay, our room was small and poly and tired looking. Bathroom was clearly new and very nice. Unfortunately we had a very noisy family in the room next door which spoilt our one night stay . On the positive side , food very good and staff excellent.

It seemed very luxurious, yet we were welcomed hartily although we were sweaty after a day of cycling.

Property is in a tranquil location and has a lovely lounge but generally in need of a bit of TLC. Room, 103, was quite small with little space to put our luggage but clean and tidy. Shower cubicle so small it’s comical and we’re not big people. Problem with screeching water pipes kept us up at night, reception informed us that they knew and plumber fixing on Monday. Breakfast OK. Staff all welcoming.

I just stayed with my 16yr old daughter overnight for the uni Open Day. It was a nice hotel in an old building with a well kept garden. Room was comfy and clean with nice features like a window seat, newly decorated bathroom. It had a lovely sash window but peeling paintwork on the outside window sill made it look more shabby than it needed to. A few things in service could be better to be 4 star. We arrived late evening 9.30pm and had said what train we’d be on. Reception was empty when we arrived with a notice to ring a mobile number if you needed anything. We rang it and the phone was at the desk. Check in was fine and we were told where breakfast was but nothing else. Eg that the lounge had drinks etc. Breakfast was very good and the staff were lovely but no-one there for a while to check you in but clear you had to as there was a list as you came in. It took a while to come and take our order for hot breakfast including coffee. So there were just a few little touches that I would’ve expected if it’s going to call itself ‘luxury’ 4 star. But we still had a very comfy stay and would stag again.

It’s a lovely hotel and very convenient stop. The staff were super friendly and helpful. We only had breakfast but it was delicious and plenty of it. The decor was lovely but needed a bit of tidying and the vase on the table needed a clean. I’m not keen on fake flowers which gather dust and the winter sun shows the glass vase needing a polish. I’m being picky hoping I’m being helpful. It was a fab stay and I thoroughly recommend it and would stay again.

we have been staying at 61 durham for a few years now as our son studies in Durham. We have always enjoyed the hotel and have been coming back on a regular basis. There is a big difference between the rooms on the first and second floor in terms of size and comfort. we always booked a standard room so have no idea how to specify for a larger room if possible. Breakfast was always a highlight of the stay with an excellent menu in a nice room. This time we were very disappointed when the breakfast menu was replaced by a few baked beans, sausages and dried up fried egges to help yourself to on a buffet. When I asked why this was I was told the hotel had been busy so the kitchen could not cope... I felt this was not a good excuse and left very disappointed.

TV in the room had no signal apparently it hadn’t been working for two weeks. Breakfast was appalling sausages were not cooked they were stone cold inside and out eggs just tasted of vinegar not edible another guest couldn’t eat there breakfast said it terrible. Really bad attitude at breakfast very abrupt. This is not what you expect from a hotel !!!!! The bedroom was very cold, there is a positive the water was hot

Positives: The bed was very comfy. Breakfast was excellent. The grounds & interior of the hotel are stunning. Staff were very attentive Negatives: No wardrobe although hangers are suspended from a bar for you to hang clothes. No iron & ironboard provided. No tissue box. Hole in hand towel. Room hadn't been cleaned properly - cobwebs on inside of window, TV remote covered in dust, dust in mirror edges

Room was true to it's name - the cosy room. No wardrobe although hangers are suspended from a bar for you to hang clothes. No iron & ironboard provided, no tissue box. The bed was very comfy so I had a good sleep. Breakfast was excellent, everything tasted so good. The grounds & interior of the hotel are stunning. The only real downside was the sub-par cleanliness in my room - cobwebs on inside of window, TV remote covered in dust, dust filling the bottom edge of the mirror, hole in hand towel.

Our one night stay at 61 Durham was very nice. The hotel is located about 10 minutes drive from Durham city centre in very nice grounds on the edge of Pittington Village. Parking was free and only a few steps from the main entrance. We were allocated room 218 on the second floor, an attic room with a sloping ceiling overlooking the lawned rear garden. The room was clean and comfortable with a small but nice bathroom and a decent shower with really good water pressure. Our bed was soft and comfortable and the room was quiet so we had a good nights sleep. Breakfast in the orangery dining room was very good and the staff both at reception and generally throughout our stay were very friendly and attentive. A really good option if you're visiting Durham and want somewhere close but without the noise and bustle of the city.

Majority of staff seemed to be new and were still in the training progress so things took a little longer than expected but all very nice and I'm sure they will be great once trained up. Nice hotel.

Staff were all pleasant and helpful and the public areas of the hotel were comfortable and welcoming. My room was clean, quiet and the bed was large and very comfortable. My only niggles were the lack of small items such as tissues and cotton wool pads. Also, as with so many hotel rooms, there wasn’t a mirror with decent lighting for applying makeup. I take my own illuminating mirror with me on my travels because this is almost always the case.

Could be a beautiful boutique hotel. It’s a little tired . Front door ( first impression) was rotted away in places and needed replacing. Great bathroom in the Sanctuary Suite just wish the bath was in it and not in the bedroom- that’s just down to taste- not my cup of tea 🛁. 2 out of the 3 lamps in our room weren’t working. A bottle of water in the room would have been nice but not offered. Hotel condition overall requires more attention to detail. Staff were great- service was very efficient, helpful and friendly. Good restaurant although a little disappointed that last food order was at 8pm as I was visiting my mother in hospital and didn’t get back in time. Cooked breakfast was good but not much left on the buffet table- no pastries left, managed to get the last of the orange juice and just a spoonful of fruit salad left to go with my Greek yogurt.
