Tigerair History

The airline with the tiger emblem commenced its ticket sales on 31 August 2004 and served the initial flight a month later. At the time, it was the first low-budget airline operating at Budget Terminal of Changi Airport, focusing on only routes within a distance of 5 hours from Singapore.

In its early years, Tigerair went through a series of challenges. Aviation fuel prices was soaring high along with severe aviation competition. One of their strategies is to offer Tigerair Promo regularly. Despite that circumstance, the airline has served 50.000 passengers and 5.000 flights with excellent On-time Performance rating within only a year.

From only 9 regional routes served by 4 fleets, Tigerair targets to add up to 9 fleets of Airbus A320, open 6 new routes (China and India) and serve up to 3 million passengers by the end of 2006. After being granted permission by the Chinese government, Tigerair officially began its routes to Shenzhen, Haikou and Guangzhou in April 2006.

In 2007, Singapore-based Tigerair acquired the Philippines airline SEAir and started to take over the operation via Tigerair website. The partnership had to be postponed until then Tigerair Philippines was officially launched in the end of 2010.

In 2012, Tiger Airways Holding Ltd. acquired 33% of Indonesia’s Mandala Airlines through its subsidiary Tigerair Singapore. After the Budget Terminal was closed down, Tigerair relocated its operation to Terminal 2 Changi Airport.

In July 2013, Tiger Airways announced Tigerair as its new brand name. The old emblem was changed to modern-styled typography ‘tigerair’. The rebranding campaign aims to give an impression of being freshly modern, warm and high-spirited.
