Vietnam Airlines (VN/HVN) is the Vietnam’s national flag carrier, headquartered at Longi Bien District, Hanoi. Starting from serving only domestic flights in 1956 as Vietnam Civil Aviation and operating with only 5 aircrafts, Vietnam Airlines was officially assigned as Vietnam’s national flag carrier in 1993.

The small airline was expanding as the Vietnamese government acquired 20 service companies together to form Vietnam Airlines Corporation, and the airline as the heart of the corporation.

As the national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines operates to achieve the mission of supporting the economy of the nation. It has more than 15 subsidiaries, some of them are Vietnam Air Service Company, Vietnam Airlines Caterers, Vietnam Airlines Engineering Company and Jetstar Pacific Airlines.

History of Vietnam Airlines

The national flag carrier of Vietnam began its journey in 1956, as the North Vietnamese Government founded the first civil aviation industry in the country namely the Vietnam Civil Aviation. The airline was military run, with two Lisunov Li-2 (Douglas DC-3 clone) supplied by Soviet Union. As demand for air transportation grows, the airlines added Ilyushin Il-14 airliners from the Soviet Union, as well as Aero Ae-45 utility aircrafts from Czechoslovkia. During the Vietnam War, embargo by the United States forced them to slow down their operations and concentrate air transport efforts for the North Vietnamese Air Force.

After the reunification of Vietnam under communist rule, the Vietnam Civil Aviation was then known as the General Department of Civil Aviation of Vietnam opened its international routes, initially to Beijing, later Vientiane, Laos. Routes to other ASEAN countries soon follow in the subsequent decade. In 1990, the government run airline rebranded itself as a Vietnam Airlines, serving international routes within ASEAN and Australia using Soviet airliners, such as the Tupolev 134, Yakovlev Yak-42, and Antonov An-24.

In 1995, Vietnam Airlines was restructured as the government gathered 20 aviation institutions and the airline, after being established as the national flag carrier 2 years earlier. Vietnam Airlines was also turned into a state enterprise.

Golden Lotus was first introduced as the new logo of the airline in 2002. This came along together with the airline’s new identity and brand strategy, followed by the delivery of its first Boeing 777-200ER in 2003 as a milestone of the airline’s fleet rejuvenation. Old fleet of Soviet-made airliners was replaced by newer, more modern western aircrafts (such as the Airbus A320 family) previously unavailable due to western trade embargo.

In 2006, Vietnam Airlines officially joined IATA (International Air Transport Association). As a pre-requirement for this international standard acknowledgment, Vietnam Airlines had to first gain the certificate of IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA).

Four years later in 2010, the airline became a member of SkyTeam, the second largest global airline alliance in the world. As a part of SkyTeam, Vietnam Airlines codeshares with most of the alliance members like Garuda Indonesia, Qantas, KLM etc.
