Located on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java, not too far from the Borobudur Temple, lies the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, the Prambanan Temple. Constructed in the 9th century, the Prambanan Temple is dedicated to the Hindu Gods; Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. There are more than 200 temples in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the largest and tallest among them will leave you awestruck!
As you walk from one temple to another, make sure you don’t miss the beautifully carved reliefs telling the Hindu epic tale of Ramayana and Bhagavata Purana as well as depictions of Hindu sages. The multitude of temples scattered around the area alone makes it worth a visit for travelers looking to learn more about Indonesian history and culture from a thousand years ago! Come in the afternoon as the views of the temple complex look even more marvelous during sunset.
