In 1831, Kendari was discovered by a Dutch national named Vosmaer. Vosmaer was also the person who first wrote and made a map of Kendari. Entering the Dutch colonial era, Kendari was appointed as the capital city of the District of Kewedanan and later the capital city of Onder Afdeling Laiwoi.
At present, Kendari is the capital of the Southeast Sulawesi Province. The topography of the city is dominated by hilly terrain with rivers that lead to Kendari Bay. This makes Kendari seafood has very good quality.
