Tentang

Lumut is a small town in Perak on the west coast of Malaysia. Lumut is located precisely halfway between the capital Kuala Lumpur and Penang. This town is commonly visited for a stopover on the way to Pangkor Island and the developed Marina Island.

Furthermore, this fishing town is also a home base of the Royal Malaysian Navy. Lumut also houses the Boustead Naval Shipyard, Malaysia’s number one naval shipbuilder—once the U.S. Navy Warships repair centre—and the unique Rahmat Maritime Museum. As a coastal town, Lumut offers wide-ranging offshore activities, such as snorkeling and diving.

How to Get There

There are several ways to reach Lumut from Kuala Lumpur with approximately 4 hours travel time.

By bus

Lumut can be reached easily by bus from several major cities in Malaysia that alight at Lumut Bus Station. The bus station is located in the middle of the town, at Jalan Iskandar Shah, next to Lumut Port, which is the gateway to Pangkor Island and other destinations.

  • From Kuala Lumpur: buses depart from Puduraya Bus Station at almost every hour. The earliest is at 07:30 AM and the latest at 09:30 PM. The trip takes 3,5 hours to 4 hours and fare starts from 24.50 MYR
  • From Butterworth/Penang: buses depart from the bus station opposite the railway station at 09:30 AM, 02:20 PM, and 6 PM. Fare starts from 10.5 MYR
  • From Ipoh: buses depart regularly from 9 AM to 7 PM with fare starting from 6.50 MYR.

By car

Lumut is located about 237 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur. It can be reached by more or less 3 to 4-hour-drive via North-South Expressway, Route 5. Exit at Bidor toll plaza and follow signs to Sitiawan or Lumut, passing through Ayer Tawar town.

Tourist Attractions

Teluk Batik Beach

Teluk Batik Beach is a very famous beach among the locals and tourists alike. Not only because of the natural beauty of the 6,5 kilometers sand stretch, but also the facilities and convenience it provides. Aside of the basic public bathrooms and changing rooms, this beach is also populated with chalets to stay in within walking distance as well as food stalls, gift shops, selling sea-related crafts, and snack huts.

Visit this beach around October and November to experience the Lumut Sea Festival, featuring some of interesting cultural shows and sea sports competitions. This event surely attracts more crowds and creates a merrier atmosphere to Teluk Batik Beach.

The Rahmat Maritime Museum

A former war ship turned into a museum, the Rahmat Maritime Museum is essentially a must-see attraction in Lumut. Housed in the 1966-built-ship named KD Rahmat, visitor is allowed to explore the interior of the ship by purchasing a ticket.

Inside, you can see the real main naval gun on deck, the control panels, radio room, workshop, mess hall, mapping room, engine room, and the special meeting room alongside the crew rooms, medical bay, and kitchen. The battleship is comprised of 6 decks in total. There is no tour guide to lead visitor around, but personnel on duty will greet you at the entrance.

Rahmat Maritime Museum is wharfed at Lumut Waterfront Marina Wing, with a free parking facility and admission fee of 12.00 MYR for adults and 6.00 MYR for children (half price).

Pulau Sembilan (Sembilan Islands)

Pulau Sembilan, or Sembilan Islands, is an archipelago comprising nine islands along the Strait of Malacca. The islands are Agas Island, Payong Island, Nipis Island, Rumbia Island, Lalang Island, Saga Island, Buluh Island, Black Rock, and White Rock. Annually, the Pulau Sembilan Fishing Safari is held as a part of tourism event. Possessing rich marine lives, Pulau Sembilan offers challenges to divers in its numerous dive sites, particularly in these three famous spots:

  • Pulau Saga: within 13-15 meters depth, it is inhabited by skunk clowfish, blue ringes angelfish, common porcupinefish, moorish idol, yellowback fusiliers, scorpio fish, razorfish, and if lucky, seahorses.
  • Pulau Buluh: 13-15 meters depth, the spot features many kinds of corals and sponges in addition to the fish species found in Pulau Saga spot.
  • White Rock: 30 meters depth, this diving spot is a little atoll and famous among divers to see both large and small nudibranchs, juvenile moray eels and boxfish.

Aside from the three islands, Pulau Lalang is the best camping spot with beach and fresh water stream. It is also where divers usually have their lunch breaks after diving.

All diving activities in Pulau Sembilan is arranged and managed by Quiver Dive Team. The Lumut branch is situated in the newly-developed man-made island, Marina Island. For a one day trip, the fare starts from 320.00 MYR excluding equipment and for the full set equipment inclusive package starts from 370.00 MYR. On a clear day and gentle currents, the visibility might greatly reach 2-4 meters. This diving hub is a must-watch, especially for diving lovers.
