Scenic Hotel Southern Cross

Very average hotel but perfect for the price

I was offered a valet carpark on the night of our stay, which i accepted because there carpark was full,so they offered to park my car in either the Casino carpark or the Speights carpark. When they went to collect my car they could not find it. Eventually they found it which took in excess of 30 minutes. Some staff are apparently unaware they have a car park availability in the Speights carpark. All staff should be aware what is available!!!

Stayed at the hotel for one night, so the room did what it needed. When you enter the hotel you get the feeling you’re in a nice hotel. Once you enter your room you realize that it hasn’t been renovated for many years. Bathroom wasn’t very clean and a few towels had stains on them. Bed sheets also had a few stains on them but you can tell they were washed. Beds were comfortable. Carpet is old and dirty so we didn’t take our shoes off.

We stayed here for a week in February in a superior double room. The room was ok, but I'm not sure what was superior about it. The bathroom was nothing like the photo, much smaller, and the wash hand basin was quiet small and set back in an alcove. The top and bottom ledges of the wood panelling around the walls of the bedroom hadn't been dusted for quite a while. There was a mirror on the bedroom wall which was hung horizontally rather than vertically and was of no use whatsoever as it was too high to be able see yourself in. We returned to the hotel one afternoon to find that the cups we had used in the morning had not been washed, the tea/coffee making items had not been replenished, and the bins had not been emptied. The bed had been made, although not very well and my husbands pyjamas were nowhere to been found. We eventually found them actually half way down the bed, under the bedcovers. I would not be inclined to stay here again.

Good location for walking around the town. Breakfast provided a good selection of freshly cooked items. We were charged 25NZD per day for parking.

Room was lovely as always but we overlooked the street and single pane windows made all traffic noise heard.

Room was great and a touch updated. Spacious also. The bathroom was dated in our room. Pretty small too. Bathtub Shower combined, and the hand basin was tiny and very low - not sure how a 6 footer person will manage. Good wifi access too. Walkable to north or south ends of Dunedin. Octagon was easily 5-7min walk away. Carpark is right next to it, just have to buzz in to reception to let you in/out. The staff can assist to park/find a spot if its busy during peak times. Could get away with street parking too, especially in back streets.
