The beds in most hotels I stay at are too soft and worn out. The Mark Spencer beds were just that; too soft for a 75 yo athlete. Normally, that would be a deal breaker for me, but I made it work cuz I had to. Otherwise, staff was very courteous, although I did sense a little stress going on amongst the staff and housekeeping within the first 24 hrs.
Frozen and microwaved croissants do not constitute a breakfast and I realize space prep areas are an issue in an old/remodeled hotel. I think the dining/sitting areas could be better utilized around having a self-serve breakfast.
All this said, the Mark Spencer Hotel is an excellent base from which to explore downtown Portland and the outlying neighborhoods.

I strongly advise women and femme-identifying people not to stay here, especially if you are traveling solo. A staff member of this hotel verbally assaulted me with gendered/violent language. I contacted the hotel about it and have received no reply after multiple weeks.
