Thinking about the retro aesthetics of Hong Kong evokes different associations for people. Some refer to the lively yet minimalist styles of the 1980s and 1990s, while others think of visual culture elements such as neon signs, plastic goods, or album covers. While perspectives vary, commonalities that comprise the aesthetics of Hong Kong include fashion, design, film, music, and dance, all reflective of Hong Kong's booming manufacturing industry in the 1960s and frequent exchanges with Asia and abroad. This nurtured a unique Hong Kong culture, blending local and international influences. In May, M+ collaborates with Canton Mambo to create a night with the theme ‘Retro Hong Kong Wave’, an evening celebrating the multifaceted culture of Hong Kong through music, dance, and diverse aspects of visual culture. Experience the retro Hong Kong waves of different eras and drift yourself into the night.
