A tired and disappointing hotel that has the pretense of luxury, while wholly failing to deliver.
We booked a junior suite for 1 night, the room was tired looking and dated with grubby carpets, a bathroom from the 90's and mattresses with the structure of an old lettuce leaf; all of which was disappointing for the price. But my main issue was how hot the room was. It must have been at least 30 degrees in the room throughout our stay and there was no air conditioning, only 1 small window that would open and 1 small, asthmatic fan. Perhaps air conditioning is difficult to install in such an old and presumably listed building, but stripping the buildup of paint from the window fittings so that more than one would open, and providing a couple of decent fans seems like a very reasonable expectation of a room costing £425 per night. Elsewhere in the hotel there is clearly some investment needed. Both of the swimming pools are scruffy, and missing tiles and the paintwork and carpets are grubby and worn throughout. Tired was the word that came to mind again and again.
On the positive side, I found all of the staff helpful and friendly and the breakfast was delicious and good value. The gardens are beautiful and well worth exploring.
