Things to Do in Joo Chiat Singapore: The Complete Neighbourhood Guide

Joo Chiat Road street sign against blue shophouse

Joo Chiat is the kind of neighbourhood that rewards arriving without too specific a plan. The streets — low-rise, shophouse-lined, and genuinely residential in a way that the more tourist-facing parts of Singapore are not — are best navigated by following whatever looks interesting: a mural glimpsed through a lane, the smell of laksa from a stall that's been open since before you were born, a shophouse painted an improbable shade of blue with ornate Peranakan tiles along its base. Officially Singapore's first Heritage Town, Joo Chiat and its beachside neighbour Katong form the historic heartland of Peranakan culture in Singapore — and in 2026, the neighbourhood is also home to natural wine bars, specialty coffee roasters, and a bakery people drive from across the island to visit on Saturday mornings. Old and new coexist here, and neither seems to be winning, which is precisely what makes it work.

Book your flights to Singapore and plan your Joo Chiat visit. Find a hotel in Katong or the East Coast area — the neighbourhood is most easily reached by taxi or bus from the city centre, or via Kembangan MRT (EW6) or Dakota MRT (CC8) with a short onward journey.

The Peranakan Shophouses — Koon Seng Road and Joo Chiat Road

The defining visual experience of Joo Chiat is the Peranakan shophouses — two and three-storey terraces painted in candy colours and decorated with intricate ceramic tiles, ornate plasterwork, and Chinese couplets that are said to bring good fortune. Koon Seng Road is the most photographed stretch: a row of immaculately preserved terraces in turquoise, coral, yellow, and green, each facade unique in its combination of tile patterns and decorative motifs. Joo Chiat Road itself contains a longer and more varied collection — many still operating as shops and restaurants — that rewards a full walk from one end to the other. East Coast Road adds another layer of conserved terrace houses with a slightly different architectural character.

The Intan — A Private Peranakan Home Museum

One of the most genuinely extraordinary cultural experiences in Singapore — a private Peranakan home museum run by collector Alvin Yapp, crammed floor to ceiling with ceramics, costumes, jewellery, heirlooms, and photographs accumulated over a lifetime of collecting. Visiting The Intan feels less like visiting a museum and more like being invited into a living Peranakan household: Alvin conducts tours personally, sharing stories behind specific pieces that bring the culture to life in a way no interpretive panel can. The one-hour tour includes tea; the two-hour tour includes a meal of authentic Nyonya dishes prepared by Alvin's mother. Booking in advance is essential as tours are by appointment only. Located at 69 Joo Chiat Terrace.

328 Katong Laksa — The World-Famous Bowl

Joo Chiat and Katong are synonymous with laksa, and 328 Katong Laksa on East Coast Road is the most globally famous version. The Katong-style laksa — rich, thick coconut broth, noodles cut short to be eaten entirely with a spoon, with generous prawns, cockles, and fishcake — has been a Singapore culinary icon for decades. The stall's reputation has drawn visitors from around the world, and the debate about whether it is truly the best laksa in the neighbourhood (or in Singapore) is a conversation that continues without resolution. Visit and form your own opinion.

Street Art and Murals

Joo Chiat has accumulated an impressive and growing collection of street murals that add contemporary visual energy to the heritage streetscape. Look for Peranakan-inspired murals at the intersection of Koon Seng Road and Joo Chiat Road, laksa and kopitiam murals near old coffee shops on Joo Chiat Road, and various smaller pieces tucked into lanes and between buildings along East Coast Road. New murals appear regularly — every visit reveals something different from the last.

Rumah Bebe — Peranakan Crafts and Culture

This small shophouse boutique on East Coast Road is part museum, part craft workshop, and part retail space — offering traditional Nyonya kebayas (intricately embroidered silk blouses), beadwork shoes, Peranakan accessories, and handmade pineapple tarts. The special draw is the ability to watch artisans at work — stitching beadwork or rolling kueh — in the small workshop space. An ideal place to purchase something genuinely locally made and culturally meaningful as a souvenir.

Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple

One of the most beautiful Hindu temples in Singapore's east — the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple on Ceylon Road dates from 1875 and has a beautifully ornate gopuram decorated with colourful deity sculptures. The temple is particularly atmospheric during festival periods, when elaborate rituals and street processions give a vivid sense of the multicultural life of Joo Chiat. The temple is a reminder that Joo Chiat has always been multicultural — Peranakan, Indian, Malay, and Eurasian communities have all contributed to the neighbourhood's character.

East Coast Park — The Natural Conclusion

A short walk or cycle from the main Joo Chiat strip, East Coast Park is Singapore's most popular seaside recreational area — 15 kilometres of beachfront, cycling paths, barbecue pits, and the East Coast Lagoon Food Village: the only outdoor beachfront hawker centre in Singapore. It is the natural way to end a Joo Chiat day — a walk to the beach, an evening meal under the stars with the sound of the sea, and stingray grilled on banana leaf in the open air.
