Many years ago, before the infamous conflagration that destroyed part of the hotel, I stayed there. Also, every Sunday, my family and I would indulge in tea/coffee with fresh scones, cream and strawberry jam. The bar, then, was most charming. Thus I found my self back at this hostelry, and even the room seemed like the one I stayed in then. Not much has changed. To many travellers, the rooms (I stayed in a Standard room so I cannot report on others) may seem dated - but they are huge! Also, the bed is fantastic! Firm, with good pillows. I enjoyed dinner in the bar and I don't think it has the same ambience as the old one. In the morning, I enjoyed breakfast in the dining area. Here I sampled the English breakfast - and the serving was large, very large. So, that dispenses with the accommodation and the eating. Now the service. Well, perhaps other establishments should send their staff to Magoebaskloof Hotel for training. From the welcome at check-in, to the service in the bar, to the service at breakfast, I found it all exemplary. This is what we know and understand about South African hospitality. By the way, there was no artifice in the friendly attitudes and actions of the staff; I experienced real warmth. In conclusion: I will return to Magoebaskloof Hotel for the comfort and the views and the hospitality.
This is a superb hotel - everything is first rate from the gorgeous gardens to the fine dining in the beautiful dining room. We loved our stay there. The pool is large so you can actually do lengths and it has a magnificent view from the rooms. The hotel bar is warm and friendly and speaks of a different time. We met the 2 sons of the owner who were terrific. They have a lot of exciting plans for this new family venture and we wish them well and hope to return in the future.
