A great hostel
Having stayed in various youth hostels and budget hotels across Europe and Asia, I can safely say that this is a cut above. This is definitely more a hostel than a hotel, with communal facilities and simply furnished dormitory style rooms. I stayed in the part that has been recently refurbished with a nod to a historical style. Staff and atmosphere are very friendly (not at all intimidating for families with children or first-time travellers), exceptionally clean (there is a no-shoes policy beyond the reception area), reasonably quiet (if you are on the top floor expect a bit of noise from the bar above till around midnight).
Bedroom and bathroom:
I stayed in a three-person room which had a double bed on a mezzanine floor and a single bed below next to a sofa. Bed was comfy, bedding was clean, and there was a proper thin duvet (rather than just a sheet, as is the norm in other places). Air-Con efficient and adjustable. WiFi had good speed even from the bedroom. No food or drink allowed in bedrooms, but there are communal kitchen spaces, bar, and lobby area where you can eat. Bathrooms are mixed gender and regularly cleaned. Showers are powerful and hot. Hairdryer provided in the bathroom.
The bar on the rooftop is a real bonus, especially if you are travelling alone. Friendly atmosphere and a wide selection of drinks. At 10MYR for a can of beer it isn't the cheapest you can get in KL, but you get a nice view across the city and good, safe company. A simple breakfast is served in the bar each morning. Freshly cooked eggs are available for 5MYR, but toast/coffee/tea are free. There is a full, printed breakfast menu, but for some reason it was only eggs available when I went.
Very near Chinatown and slightly away from the centre. A walkable distance from Petronas Towers (45mins or so), but there are excellent transport links via a brand new underground station and bus station. Public transport is cheap.
Although they are clean the toilet seat and the toilet floor is often very wet with water. Also, one of the showers is in the same cubicle as the one of the toilets on each floor. Music noise from the bar travels onto the top bedroom-floor.
