I was not sure what to expect when I booked the room last minute coming from Queenstown, NZL, but as soon as I saw the marque from the bus I relaxed. The lobby was nicely done, clean and welcoming. The concierge was friendly and welcoming. He very clearly explained a hold that needed to be placed on my card, and removed upon checking out, and gave me my room card. The room is smallish, but not tiny, very clean, very nice bathroom, comfortable bed, and large LCD tv, desk, couch, small refrigerator, hot pot and a phone. The Britomar train station is a 15 minute down hill walk away, and many busses stop a 1/2 block away from the hotel entrance. Queen Street is a major thoroughfare packed with food options, and shopping. After 10 pm Queen Street is best left to the adventurous and streetwise, not to say that it is dangerous, but slightly sketchy yes, but being from NYC it was fine.
I would highly recommend the Mercure to anyone looking for affordable, clean, safe lodging in Auckland! Floor access anytime, and entry into the building at night are restricted without a room card, so as I said safe. But be forewarned it is located at the top of the hill that is Queen Street, so you can walk off dinner!

I stayed here for work, and was really impressed. It was just one night, but I wish it was more. Breakfast - I was a little disappointed when I booked when it said “contextual breakfast” but, when I got down for breakfast it was a full cooked buffet PLUS continental. Seriously impressed.
The room was clean, well presented and spacious. Location was great for pick up and drop off. If you want a great central location, friendly staff and a great breakfast, this is the place.
