If you’ve done most of the experiences in Chiang Mai, including a visit to Doi Inthanon and temples, why not explore the nearby city of Lamphun? This unassuming town South of Chiang Mai is a less visited stop in Thailand. But don’t let the number of visitors fool you, the quiet village boasts a long and storied history and is home to numerous cultural sites.
Wat Phra That Hariphunchai: This gleaming 46-meter tall stupa is one of Lamphun’s most popular sites. This major place of worship is known for its classic Lanna-style architecture, sacred Buddha images, and golden chedis.
Khua Mung Tha Sing: Visit a popular market filled with vendors selling souvenir-worthy items and a fair number of tasty local dishes. We’ll stroll along the kiosks taking in the sights, sounds, and smells, and maybe even stopping to pick up a souvenir or two to take home.
Baan Tawai: This village is known both locally and internationally for its wood carved handicrafts. The items you’ll find here are made by local artisans who embed a distinct ‘Baan Tawai’ flair in their designs. You can find everything from antiques and decorative pieces to textiles and jewelry.
Rubber Tree Road: If you choose Option A, we’ll cycle along the Lamphun route, where we’ll pass one of the oldest roads in the North of Thailand. This road got its name from the 2,000 rubber trees approximately 30 meters high that flank both sides of the road, making it a glorious ride.
Ping River: If you choose Option B, we’ll cycle along the Saraphi route, which borders the Ping River. We’ll pass lush rice paddies, see a few historic statues, and catch a glimpse of local life by the riverside.
