Tucked away inside the historic city walls, Middletons is a beautiful hotel in an historic building set within a pretty courtyard with its own gardens – a peaceful oasis while being minutes' away from Fairfax House and the Museum Gardens. We were offered a complimentary upgrade to the stylish Lady Anne room, featuring nice touches like a full-size bathtub and White Company toiletries. The breakfast was excellent, and we were spoiled for choice – trying different options on each morning of our three-day stay. Next time we're back in York, we'll be glad to stay at the Middleton's again.

Wonderful sized large room. Very comfortable large bed. Loved the solid wood wardrobes. The bathroom was large bath and shower. Hand cream and body wash device ne smell. The staff were so welcoming, helpful and extremely efficient. Breakfast was excellent quality and range of choices. Would definitely choose this hotel again. So handy to walk to the centre and the races. Car free for the weekend loved it.

The accommodation provided was significantly below the standard represented in the photographs displayed online and did not reflect the quality I reasonably expected based on the price I paid. The room and facilities differed materially from the images used to market the property, resulting in a disappointing and misleading experience. The room was not the cleanest either with dust over the walls and lampshade. The food at the bar was ok however I would not recommend to get the fish and chips as it was so salty that was not edible. Following a discussion with the hotel manager, I was informed that this discrepancy arose because I made my reservation through a comparison website rather than booking directly with the hotel. I find this explanation unacceptable. Regardless of the booking channel used, the accommodation provided should correspond to the description and images presented at the time of booking. Customers should not receive an inferior room or experience simply because they booked through a third-party platform, particularly where this was neither disclosed nor made clear before payment. The expectation created by the online listing formed an integral part of my decision to book and of the price I agreed to pay. Had I been aware that the room allocated would not match the advertised standard, I would have reconsidered my booking.

We had a very stressful check-in as the receptionist insisted I had made two separate bookings and that one of our rooms was only for one night, the other for two. I had my Expedia email for both rooms both for 2 nights. We asked for quiet rooms so were given room next to the road, overlooking the carpark entrance and the bins! My colleague was given a ground floor room with a window opening onto the street which made her feel uncomfortable. We went to discuss with reception and they insisted we were wrong and the room was not a street level. 3 times we had to repeat it and each time we were dismissed. On the 4th repeat the receptionist agreed and changed the room. There is no lift and no offer of help with 3 flights of stairs. When I spoke to the duty manager about the lift he simply told me it says about the lack of lifts on the webpage. I was in room 35. The room was a good size but the bathroom was small with no shelving for toiletries - I had to use the bedside table. The bathrobes were lovely. Any complaints were met with highly defensive responses. The breakfast team were lovely and very helpful. However the buffet selection was very un-inspiring though there was a good cooked breakfast menu.

Just a few minutes walk from the city center. Quiet, clean, cozy and well maintained.

This is a really pretty hotel nestled in beautiful gardens whilst being very conveniently located to all the York attractions. Very helpful and pleasant staff. Fabulous tapas offerings and good breakfasts.

We just had a cosy double room but nonetheless it did the job. Lovely place to stay, nice comfortable environment and the food was excellent.

Firstly what a prefect hotel for discovering York, only 5 minutes walk to town, the hotel is well maintained and the tapas menu and presentation is excellent, you would struggle to find standard higher to be honest! The breakfast is good and well presented, down point if picky, not consistent first day two rashers of bacon , second day one? Sausages didn’t seem over cooked,I should have said something, the room really nice and clean, was asked if I would like it refreshed while I was out,only find nothing had happened when I returned? Maybe they just forgot to tell housekeeping? Got to say as a seasoned traveller the hotel still out scores many at a similar price ..

Lovely hotel created from several historic buildings into a modern facility. Very pleasant reception and lounge area with bar. The rooms were clean and to a high standard, roomy and with a good shower room. There is a lot of interesting artwork throughout. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. We booked two rooms. Room servicing is only on request, we asked our rooms to be made up each day, sadly our friends room was not properly made up on arrival and servicing of the rooms was a bit hit and miss. We had asked for rooms in a quiet area and our request was honoured. Breakfast was excellent. A minor gripe would be the number of emails received before the stay concerning pre-information on things like breakfast time and pre-booking in and pre-checkout. The location is excellent for walking into central York and in a quiet area. Despite the minor issues with our rooms we would recommend the hotel as a good place to stay.
