I chose this hotel Palais Faraj because it was one of the highest-rated and most recommended places to stay in Fes. It turned out to be one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had.
The beautiful zellige decoration and historic building may look impressive in the photos, but that is the only positive thing I can say. Everything else was a huge disappointment.
The room was extremely overpriced. It had virtually no natural light—the window faced nothing but a wall with a small hole. The room was dark, depressing, and smelled so bad that spending time inside was unpleasant.
The cleanliness was completely unacceptable. There were cockroaches running across the floor, and I even found them inside the closet. Finding insects in a room at this price level is simply inexcusable.
If you have any mobility issues, stay away. There is no elevator, and you must climb several stairs while carrying your luggage.
The location is another major problem. It is in an isolated area, and you cannot safely or comfortably walk anywhere during evening and also if it is hot, better not. Every time you leave the hotel, you need transportation. This is not the Fes experience we expected.
What makes this even more disappointing is that this hotel charges luxury prices while providing an experience that falls far below even basic expectations.
My advice is simple: do not stay here. Only my 3rd. day they changed my room to a normal room with window and sunlight.
