An absolutely beautiful old property that has suffered from not being maintained, and is being run on a bare minimum of effort. Sadly this could be a spectacular experience but the staff seem worn out and not especially bothered. There’s a smell of damp in our tiny room, which feels more like student accommodation than a hotel room.
Comfortable, and we slept well, but whatever you do don’t ask for water at nighttime! The shower and bathroom are basic and in need of an upgrade. The bar menu is not fit for anything except the most perfunctory dining, and the surroundings are lack soul and feel like an old people’s home.
The breakfast offered a good choice but prepared on a once-and-done basis. The room had a canteen feel with a layout that lacked finesse, trestle tables à la school hall.
Shame really, with a bit of imagination this could be a truly spectacular place to stay. The grounds are the best part of it.
