Check in was Great! Surrounding area needs an update and hotel under renovation which it needs. But overall a positive experience.

location was good

Our room had a horrible view, we were on the second floor and were eye level with a huge roof. It was weird.

Property is definitely showing its age. They were cleaning or rather painting the exterior. Our room had a crooked ceiling light. The pocket door to the shower room had swelled so bad it wouldn’t hardly close. The stopper in the sink was shot. I noticed the bottom of the pool looked chipped like it had been hit with a hammer many times. No hot tub was very disappointing. That’s on me. I should have looked at your amenities closer.

It was wonderful! Staff, service and the food was excellent!

We were in town for the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and The Grand Naniloa was a terrific hotel to stay in for the festival. Very convenient location in Hilo. Staff was friendly and the valet was super fast and they were working in overdrive for the festival. Lively hotel bar and nice markets. The room itself was comfortable and spacious, just looked like some of the wood work in the room was unbecoming. Beds were comfortable. My only and biggest complaint is that the hotel blocked the broadcast channel of the Merrie Monarch to force people to go down to the lounge to watch on their tv to make money off the bar. Seemed wrong to me. We were lucky and had tickets to go - but when you want to come back when it starts to get late, no can watch in your room!

Just amazing!

When we checked in and got to our room, the room was not cleaned yet from the time the former occupants left. Housekeeping had to come up and clean the entire room. Bed had bed bugs. Balcony was very dirty.

Amazing staff and facility

Parking is an issue

Had to make an emergency trip from California to Hilo. My dad was being energency disembarked from a cruise shio where he was near death for 5 days at sea. Fortunately the Holland America medical team were able to keep him alive to Hilo where i met my mom at the ER. Dad is going to make it home eventually. The staff, especially Cindy at the front desk were BEYOND helpful and showed extreme compassion when dealing with my 79 year old mom and making sure she is as taken care of as they could possibly do. The rooms are very clean and the beds are very comfortable. All we needed was a little confort and quiet after long days at the hospital. The free nightly voucher for a Mai Tai didn't hurt as well. It wasnt a vacation this time, but ill definitely return for one with my wife and kids. Its a very convenient location.

Property was ok but in definite need of upgrades and care. The surrounding area is shady at best but could be beautiful if investments are made to buildings, elevators, and electrical systems. The electrical outlets in room didn’t work and were sooty. Overall, needs a redo.

Great location. Huge property. Free drinks were strong (thank you!!) Nice property. Shower water wouldn’t drain - that was gross showering in a tub full of dirty water. Could use some maintenance. Overall cool place - safe for family trip. Many laundry machines. I’d stay again.

My family and I had a good stay. Checking into our room took longer than what I was accustomed to(25 minutes) but much shorter than expected based on the reviews I read. The staff were friendly and professional. Our room was mostly updated and it was quite clean with an excellent view of the ocean. We even saw a sea turtle swimming from our balcony. However, the rusty and mildewed balcony needs work. It seems they’re working on doing that and once completed, it would make a dramatic difference. Overall, we had a good stay. The hotel could transform from good to excellent with proper improvements to the hallways, balconies and bathrooms(ours was a bit dated with poor lighting). Mahalo

Beautiful view from our oceanview room. Convenient to have a restaurant and bar on property. 2 drink coupons given per night stay. Entertainment was also nice in the evenings. Loved the sun beds for resting in the shade and the tiki torches lit up at night. Our room was clean and spacious. However it was super noisy. The air conditioner was LOUD! The toilet ran and ran for days, 24 hours a day. Also very loud. Reported both to the desk and no one came as far as we know. Our waiter Keane in the restaurant was superb! One of the female waitresses could use some retraining. If you need to park a car, it’s $25 a day with no option to self park. There is street parking, but it was crowded annd also the anrea outside the hotel seemed a little shady to leave a car overnight. Overall, i would stay here again as it looks like they are doing some updating. And it really was very convenient.

Staff was great. Needs a little work on the cleanliness, but they are renovating. Felt self parking wasn’t really an option cause it would be road parking and it’s a little far walk/.

Staff was friendly and helpful. Heads up that they only allow valet parking near to the hotel, $25/day and a resort fee of $39. Hotel a bit dated and our room smelled of fresh paint. Drove to the botanical gardens, beautiful! The trees, park and area close to the hotel is beautiful plus the ocean waves were relaxing to listen to. We had nice views from our room.

Loved the bath tub in the room, along with the view!!! Super clean hotel!!

Not up to Hilton standards

We recently returned to the Grand Naniloa Hotel in 2025 after a wonderful stay in 2018. While the property still has its charms, it’s clear it’s seen better days. Extensive renovations are underway, and management provided disclosures and acknowledgment letters in our room, but other reviews are correct: much of the art is missing, and the property needs more care. Highlights The hospitality was excellent. Front desk staff, valet, and restaurant teams were warm and professional. The on-site restaurant remains a standout, offering exceptional dining. The grounds are beautiful, with Wi-Fi extending to seating areas by the water. I loved working from the cabanas while spotting sea turtles in the shallows—a magical experience. Kayak rentals are available, though we didn’t use them this time. The gym is well-equipped, including a Peloton bike with foot cages. Practical Notes Be prepared for a $100/night deposit charged upfront. This covers the $39/night resort fee and $25/night valet parking you'll pay (street parking is possible but inconvenient). Local kids often enjoy the pool and dock areas, which created special moments for our son but might not suit everyone. Despite its current challenges, the hotel’s location and hospitality make it worth another visit—though we’ll wait until renovations are complete to fully enjoy its potential.
