The whole property is so run down and poorly maintained and that is just the start, I would have been better off staying at a premier inn 😞

Nice and quiet. Bed comfortable. No restaurant but plenty local options. Including a Japanese vegan cafe on Milk Street.

The room was clean enough. However, the carpet was very stained, it either needed a good clean or replacing. The curtains matched but were different lengths. As there is no air conditioning the room would have been unbearable without the fan that was provided. We were in room 307 which included climbing 3 flights of stairs. The carpets on the stairs need some maintenance as they are worn through. The hotel must have once been very grand. It is very clean and tidy with very helpful staff. However, there is only around 20 car parking spaces. We got what we paid for.

Hotel in need of a refurb, staff friendly, parking on site but very tight

We stayed for 2 nights the room was absolutely boiling there was a fan in the room that was useless, & the windows only opened about 2 inches, The towel rail was on hot and couldn’t be turned down, also we meet friends there they’re room was exactly the same to hot couldn’t sleep. I paid for the car park through the app & was charged £20 for 2 nights our friends paid at reception & paid £10 for 2 night 😡 why wasn’t we told it was cheaper to pay in reception when on line it says £10 per night for parking

Old coaching inn centrally located and within walking distance of all amenities Clean and tidy but a little worn in places. Not for picky travellers but ideal for those seeking a characterful stay. Some great historic features and plenty private parking. Good value and a memorable stay.

Very noisy rooms from main road and pubs next door. Very noisy.

I really did enjoy my stay here due to history of the place, I loved the old and quirky vibe about the place, very comfortable bed and the room was clean and nice. Downfall is there is no breakfast service ,not a big deal but it would nice . There's no proper functioning bar , they only have a very small selection of bottled beer & spirits they didn't even have a straw . You can't even get a cup of tea in the bar ( used the word bar very loosely ) And you have to ask the receptionist to get you a drink and that made you feel a bit awkward. I feel people would like to sit there in the ambiance if there was this offered.You do have a kettle in your room to make tea but you would not bring it down three floors just to sit there as there is no lift, so anyone with difficulty in walking this is not the place for you.( It didn't bother me at all ) Day staff was not to be desired. They weren't very friendly and I felt like I was intruding if I was to ask them a question , I'd also heard them being rude to other guests arriving or with questionsOn the other hand Night staff were amazing very patient and friendly the blonde young girl in particular. Unfortunately I can't remember her name. She was a wealth of knowledge on the hotel And if she wasn't busy, was happy to share all the details which I loved she made us feel very much at home, she was very professional and helpful. Overall I did enjoy my stay and now that I know some services are not available I would still go back.

The first room I had, the toilet wouldn't flush. Got moved to a second room with no toiletries, a missing curtain and a cupboard that smelt of sewage. Third room was fine. Staff were friendly helpful and apologetic, but the place wasn't great.

The location was good,didn't use bar.the decor needed upgrading in parts.The room was ok and clean

I booked The Lion because I wanted a central location with parking, both of which it provided. It is a handsome old building sadly in need of repair and refurbishment, due to the age of the building I didn’t expect a lift or air conditioning but I was disappointed by the grubby carpets, tatty furniture and lumpy bed. I only saw three members of staff during my stay, the two receptionists on duty when I arrived obviously didn’t want to be there, one totally ignored me and the other one was barely civil, however the receptionist on duty the following morning was pleasant and helpful. The general impression was of a rundown and neglected hotel, probably best avoided

Tired hotel needs updating

Great location close to everything, pubs restaurants and castle. Has its own parking which is a big plus. Was once a grand hotel that is showing its age. No elevator or restaurant and the rooms are a little rough. It was clean enough but one of our pillow cases had a blood stain on it which was pretty gross.

Lovely hotel with a lot of history which was displayed around various walls at reception, If you don’t mind walking up various sets of stairs to get to your room (we were on level 1) you’ll be fine. There weren’t a lot of stairs but it was “walk up a couple then down a corridor, through a door and few more steps, another corridor and other door”. The floors creaked also but it was an old building so can’t complain. Free on site parking but be aware, pigeons live in the roof of the parking area and graced us with a present! We were able to walk to all the sites we wanted to visit so it was really hardly in that respect. No meals available on site but there is a bar on site.

Location was very good. The room was basic

It is a very old building and we had to climb up and down many stairs, but we are both agile so that was fine. We had a tiny television, which we didn't try out. We only had 1 set of towels in the room and not enough milk for drinks, so we asked at reception to rectify this. We were asked if we had looked in the wardrobe, we had, but found nothing. Extra milk and towels were then supplied. Later we decided to make hot drinks and discovered one large mug and one considerably smaller mug!. I sent my daughter to request a decent size mug, the reception staff did not think they had access to remedy this, but it was sorted eventually. When we checked out the receptionist let us make our way with our luggage to the front door, it was locked, so we came back and she confirmed our exit was out of the back door. I feel the reception staff had failed in certain areas, poor communication and customer service!

Needs a complete overhaul , very shabby but considering the price and location ok

Despite saying pet friendly, the hotel failed to mention a £15 cost per animal per night which was unexpected, and extortionate given the state of the place. Parking £5 per night, again unexpected. Room very very basic, small and hot. We didn't sleep 1st night due to heat/lack of air circulation and outside noise. We bought ourselves a fan for night 2 which helped. Wonder if hotel attracts rowdy guests with no respect for sleeping guests? Or were we just there at the wrong time? In general, decor very tired and outdated. Could use a referb desperately. On the positive side, the hotel is central. One can access town amenities on foot, and the hotel is steeped in history which is nice. Would visit Shrewsbury again but find alternative accommodation.
