Very nice ryokan, the private onsen was the biggest highlight.

This ryokan is absolutely beautiful. The staff was very kind and exceeded our expectations in everyway. I would recommend this hotel to all my family and friends. The view from our personal onsen was beautiful. After a week of walking around tokyo it was the perfect way to relax. The food was great and we loved our personal dinning area. I have no complaints at all. If you are looking to stay in hakone, stay in Hakone Airu.

The food was excellent. Facilities is good. However, our room has a defective thermostat. There’s no other room to move us on the night of our stay. The property did not have a portable heater . Property doesn’t have extra blankets to use . It was cold in the room. The following morning at check out we notified the staff. They help us and apologized for the inconvenience.

What an amazing stay at this beautiful spot! Plan getting there ahead cause not all taxis will go right up to it but once we walked in it was a paradise! Greeted at the door, with the ultimate Balinese experience and hospitality with a welcome drink, custom options, a massage treatment to choose from, and then the room- wow! What a view over the hills with the onsen tub on the balcony!! The amenities, the robes, the traditional tatami and floor bedding- such an authentic yet comfortable experience! The private and catered dinner and breakfast experience along this tranquility was not only delicious but made us feel like royalty! The best part was the friendliness and attention of all staff! Thank you!!

Amazing place with amazing staff

We had an amazing stay. It was such a rejuvenating experience! The mat beds were probably the most comfortable sleep we’ve ever gotten and the always hot hot spring tub will be something I dream about forever. Food was amazing, although the portions are almost too much for one meal. We left each meal stuff beyond belief and partially dreaded not being hungry enough to eat the next one haha. Such an amazing stay, we would most definitely come back again!

Amazing hotel and wonderful hospitality. We felt right at home. Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was delicious too. We’ll definitely stay here again when we’re back in Hakone. We booked a room with a private onsen and enjoyed it.

My husband really wanted a private onsen because of a cancer scar. He very much enjoyed it. The futon was very difficult for me to get up because I will be receiving a shoulder operation when I go home and I can’t use my arm.

The private onsen was amazing, refreshing, and relaxing. The 12 course breakfast and dinner was delicious. We stayed 2 nights and had the shabu shabu hot and crab dinner the next. The staff was superb. All our needs were met and exceeded customer service. The whole place was clean and quiet. Perfect for celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. This experience was a very memorable one. Thank upu Hakone Airu. We hope to be back again very soon.

Pros: In-room bath Cons: Food, service, staff attitude This hotel is highly rated on Expedia and priced as a luxury hotel, so my expectation was high. Most of the staffs do not speak proper Japanese OR English, and they had poor attitude. Far from the standard of service quality you'd expect from a high end Ryokan. Food was mediocre at best, with some items that must have been left outside for a few hours. We ordered a steak dinner, and though the meat seemed to be of good quality they asked us to cook on our own with this tiny candle type heating device. Since the meat was thick, it took us over ONE HOUR to cook. Because of this it took us long time to finish eating, and while our table was still full of food, we were asked if we were ready for desserts... We felt constantly rushed in several occasions. Isn't this supposed to be a relaxing resort? I only read a few positive reviews before booking, but now after our stay I'm reading the past negative reviews and can't agree more with most of them. I wished that I read them all before booking. 廊下で24時間流れている不気味な音楽、食事からチェックアウト時まですぐ傍で目を光らせて急かすような態度の従業員、逆の意味で一生忘れられない話のネタをいただきました。二度と訪れません。 Expediaの高評価が信じられません。本当にがっかりです。

Enjoyed my stay immensely - the staff was wonderful, the food was amazing (they offer both Japanese and Western options each meal, I chose Japanese), and the patio and onsen and was so peaceful and relaxing.

The best experience we have ever had! We were given a drink on arrival, escorted to the most majestic room we’ve ever stayed in before a phenomenal dinner. We woke ourselves up by getting in the onsen as snow hit the mountains and roofs around us! 10/10, the most memorable experience!

I don’t write reviews. That being said; the staff are incredibly kind and patient. The rooms felt quite traditional and the private onsen provided great serenity and relaxation. I would stay here again if given the chance.

My husband and I stayed here as part of a trip to Japan to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. The staff made us feel welcome and the decor was so wonderful! We really enjoyed the private hot tub in our traditional tatami room. As for the kaiseki dinner, it was delicious but I wasn't prepared for the sheer amount of food! I am not a very big eater (at night) and the successive services impressed me a lot! I think it would have been a suitable amount of food for 3 people. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't make it to the end and ended up wasting some of the meal. As I know Japanese etiquette requires you to finish every thing so as to not waste, I felt bad for a while after. 申しわけありませんでした! Hakone was a quiet moment to ourselves, nestled between Kyoto and Tokyo during our trip. We had a lovely time, thank you!

I loved my stay at Hakone Airu. It was peaceful, quiet and the staff were able to speak English. The facility was very tourist friendly. I absolutely loved the private onsen and being able to dip in and out whenever we liked. The lounge space next to the private onsen is such a bonus. The bathroom and shower were very clean as well. The only slight discomfort was the fact the shower is exposed to the outside so can be very cold when you initially step in the shower during winter time.
