Nice hotel and a good location ,on our particular visit ,there just didn't seem to be enough staff working . The quality of the food was ok ,but having stayed there a few years ago expected it to be better. Overall disappointed.

Beautiful grand hotel, perfect location to town. Very clean. Was nervous of the cheap mattress and the room smelt & felt very damp and musty. However, we slept well and once we aired the room out everything was fine. Would stay again.

It didn’t help that there were two weddings on the day: the staff and facilities were clearly overwhelmed. Our room was fine and good size, but the window could only be held open by a bottle. There is a lack of communication between the reception and the spa: on day one nobody told us that the spa closed early, it took us (and a group of other frustrated guests) a while at the spa reception to figure this out. On day two we arrived on time, cued, to be than told by a disgruntled teenager that we should have brought a paper slip from our booking. Than, another delay, found out that the pool is an extra fee anyway. In the evening the main bar was closed due to ‘maintenance issues’, we were send on a goose chase to another bar, which was rammed by another wedding, and manned by another disgruntled young person - there seemed to be ample

We spent one night - a busy Saturday. Our room (50) was quite small accessed by an awkward triangular ante-room. There was nothing to put our suitcase on and in the bathroom no hook to hang anything on. But it was clean and quiet. Dinner and breakfast were OK though orange juice was disappointingly watery. The restaurant manager was good but junior staff were inexperienced.

The hotel is a lovely old building and was probably once a really grand hotel, and although some of the features still remain, some investment would work wonders. Staff were very friendly, breakfast was good as was our room with the exception of the bathroom which was not good . The tiles around the bath were full of mould, the toilet talk half an hour to refill after flushing. In the main part of the hotel there are many seating areas and a games room, which me and my family spent some time in. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

The hotel was well located with ample parking. It’s a large period hotel which in some areas is looking tired. Staff were friendly and helpful.

It's an old historical building so inevitably a bit creaky but clean and full of character. Restaurant and bar very nice with lots of space to relax in public areas. Disappointed to discover pool access required a day pass to use. We knew parking was extra but afterwards went back to the booking page and did find reference to the extra charge for the pool but it wasn't easy to find! If you stay one night and want a swim on arrival and on departure that's two passes! Changing facilities are pretty poor but functional as was the pool itself which was a good size but only steep steps for access and very little space or chairs to relax afterwards. We didn't pay for any spa treatments so didn't see anything apart from the gym that justified calling it a spa. Evening meal package was reasonable for the price with breakfast. Staff friendly and helpful. Great location for visiting the town on foot.

We were in the famous 'room 42', that used to be the staff stay over room according to staff. When we arrived they made us feel most unwelcome as we'd 'only just booked so I'm not sure if we have a room'. I probably should've turned away then. Point to not, my children felt like they were in some magical world when we first visited; they LOVED it. So the room I mentioned was on its own up a dingy stair well, used mainly for cleaning and so forth. To say it is tired would be an understatement. It appeared more like 'The Shining' than a reasonably nice hotel. The room itself was not a family room, but a door into what was clearly two rooms with a shared bathroom once upon a time. When my 6 year old woke up screaming at 1am, it was not ideal to have to travel 20 metres to him. As we arrived after tea last night ready to crash, it became apparent our main King bed had not actually been made under the duvet. We had to go to the porter to get him to make it up. Again, not ideal with a 6 and 8 year old now pottering in their PJs and ready to go to bed. All in all, a really poor experience that unfortunately made us feel most unwelcome. It could not have been different to the last time we came. We love the town but goodness my children left there wondering what on earth we had subjected them to. Gutted for our last night of family holiday.

This was my first trip alone. Sadly my husband passed away in December. Whilst dining I was sat next to a couple who were given preferential treatment. I was feeling quite vulnerable anyway and was just ignored. Everyone should receive the same treatment. Also my meal was very poor.

The hotel itself is a lovely building and must have been very grand in its day however it is feeling very run down in places now. The good: The room was very spacious and comfortable with a dining table and chairs and plenty of room for us. The bed was very comfy. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The not to good: The bathroom was basic and in need of modernisation. The pool and changing area were not very nice at all. Very run down and didn't feel clean. It's also poor to ask guests to pay to use the facilities. Breakfast was also not the best. We were expecting a better hotel to be honest.

Room was dated and had a noticeable musty smell and the staircase filthy. The room itself was not at all what we expected. Instead of a family room, we were presented with multiple separate areas connected by long corridors and several heavy doors, including three separate bedrooms. All of the rooms were very dated, had a musty odour, and were furnished with hostel-like furniture. The bathroom itself was extremely basic, with an unpleasant shower cubicle and were down a long corridor. The windows were dirty, the curtains were creased and the overall cleanliness and presentation were far below what we would expect for the price paid. The television signal was poor, and we were unable to access some channels. We used the swimming facilities during our stay and were told that although lockers were available, there were no keys for them. Breakfast was buffet style and acceptable. However, I was disappointed to have to fetch my own tea and coffee. We was staying with my husband and grandson and assumed that a “family room” would mean a shared comfortable space. Instead, we were separated across multiple areas, which was both inconvenient and disappointing. Overall, the quality of the room did not reflect the price charged, and the experience fell far short of expectations.

Clean room

I love this hotel, I visit at least twice a year. Its large, but comfortable and perfectly situated for both the town of Buxton and the wider peak district. The staff are mainly young, but helpful and hardworking ....they could do with a few more sometimes, they can be very busy, especially in the bar. I like that is so close to the opera house and all the lovely little restaurants, plenty of shops too. The breakfasts are worth having, i havent had dinner there as there is so much choice of restaurants in town.

We are in our 60's and we felt young staying in this hotel. The rooms were very warm in the hot summer with only one towel between two of us in the rather outdated bathrooms. The large dining room only had 3 dinner reservations on a Friday evening so we ate out and breakfast in a nice local cafe was more appealing than having it in. Faded glory......

We chose this hotel because it advertised a swimming pool and thought it would be a nice treat for my son and me. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to expectations. At check-in, we were kindly offered a complimentary room upgrade, which we appreciated. Sadly, the upgraded room felt more like a downgrade. There was no toilet paper, no iron, the toilet roll holder was broken. Although reception brought toilet paper and an iron when requested, no one was able to repair the broken toilet roll holder during our stay. The biggest disappointment came the following morning when we went to use the swimming pool. We were told we had to pay an additional charge to access it. This was never made clear when we booked, and the pool was one of the main reasons we chose this hotel over other options. Had we known there was an extra fee, we would likely have booked elsewhere. When I raised these issues with reception before leaving, I received an apology but no real attempt to resolve the concerns. The staff were polite throughout, which I appreciate, but the overall experience fell well below what was advertised and what we expected. I hope the hotel improves both its room standards and the clarity of its information for future guests.
