My stay here was very pleasant. The staff was friendly, and I even received complimentary cookies from the hotel. The food was varied and delicious, and was always refilled when it ran out. Check-in is required at 2 PM, and check-out was quite fast. The bedroom and bathroom were clean. It was great. I hope Arthama continues to be successful. I will probably stay here again if I ever visit Makassar 👍👍👍

Best Areas to Stay in Manggala

Manggala, while a single administrative region, is a city of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of attractions. Dishes like Ikan Bakar (grilled fish), Coto Makassar (a traditional beef soup), and Pallubasa (a rich meat dish) are local specialties that offer an authentic taste of South Sulawesi. Exploring these unique flavours is an essential part of the Manggala experience, providing a delicious insight into the local culture.

For an authentic dining experience, exploring Manggala's local markets and street food stalls is highly recommended. Areas around Losari Beach and the central Manggala district are particularly known for their vibrant food scenes, offering everything from grilled seafood to local snacks and sweets. For Muslim travellers, Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and Manggala offers abundant Halal food options. Most local eateries and restaurants proudly display Halal certifications, ensuring peace of mind for those seeking permissible meals, making it easy to enjoy the local cuisine with confidence.

The affordability of dining in Manggala is another significant draw for international travellers. Street food and local warungs offer meals for as little as ₱ 50-100, providing an incredibly budget-friendly way to sample local delicacies. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 300-600 per person for a full meal, offering a comfortable dining experience with a wider menu selection. Even upscale dining establishments remain relatively affordable compared to Western standards, with a fine dining experience costing around ₱ 800-1,500 per person, making Manggala an excellent destination for food lovers on any budget.

When dining in Manggala, embracing local customs will enhance your experience. Meals are often enjoyed communally, and it's polite to accept offers of food. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) being customary. While many Indonesians have a good grasp of English, learning a few basic Bahasa Indonesia phrases like "Terima kasih" (Thank you) can go a long way. Be adventurous and try new dishes; the culinary journey is one of the most rewarding aspects of visiting Manggala.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Manggala

Understanding and respecting local customs is key to a smooth and enjoyable trip in Manggala. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality, and a friendly demeanor goes a long way. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a polite nod. When visiting religious sites or people's homes, it's important to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and it's advisable to maintain a respectful distance. Always use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left hand is considered unclean in many Indonesian cultures.

When visiting popular spots like Bugis Waterpark Adventure or DELTA MAS II, it's important to be aware of local norms. While these are recreational areas, maintaining a respectful attitude is appreciated. Dress codes might be more relaxed for water parks, but modest swimwear is generally recommended. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask for permission before taking pictures of individuals. Queuing culture is present, and while it might differ from what you're used to, patience and order are generally expected. Being mindful of these small details ensures a positive interaction with local attractions and staff.

Manggala is generally a safe city for international travellers, but like any urban area, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. Taxis are also an option, but it's advisable to use metered taxis or agree on a fare beforehand. Familiarizing yourself with offline maps and essential travel apps can also be very helpful for navigation and communication.

In case of emergencies, the local police number is typically 110. For medical assistance, dial 118 for an ambulance. While there might not be a dedicated tourist police force, local authorities are generally helpful. For Filipino travellers, it's always wise to know the location of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which can provide assistance in emergencies. Carrying travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen medical expenses or incidents. Staying informed and prepared will ensure a safe and worry-free journey through Manggala.

Getting to Manggala and Getting Around

Reaching Manggala from the Philippines is a journey that typically involves a flight, with connections often required. Major Philippine hubs like Manila (NAIA/MNL) and Cebu (CEB) offer flights to major Indonesian cities, from where you can take a connecting flight to Makassar's Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG), which serves Manggala. Direct flights are less common, so expect a travel time of around 6-10 hours, depending on layovers. Flight prices can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 10,000-20,000 for a round trip, especially if booked in advance. The airport is located about 20-30 kilometres from the city centre, with transfer options including taxis and ride-hailing services. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka for your convenience.

Once you've arrived in Manggala, navigating the city is relatively straightforward, though it requires understanding the local transport landscape. The most convenient way for international travellers to get around is by using ride-hailing apps like Grab, which offer cars and motorcycles at competitive prices. Metered taxis are also available, but it's crucial to ensure the meter is used or to negotiate the fare beforehand. For a more local experience, consider using 'angkot' (minibuses) or 'ojek' (motorcycle taxis), though these are best suited for shorter distances and for those comfortable with a more adventurous mode of transport. Public buses also operate, connecting various parts of the city.

The best time to visit Manggala generally falls during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The shoulder months of April and October can also be good, offering fewer crowds and potentially lower hotel prices. Peak season, coinciding with school holidays in Indonesia and major international travel periods, can see higher prices and more visitors, particularly around July and August. For travellers from the US, Europe, and India, aligning your visit with these drier months will ensure the most comfortable experience.

Before you depart for Manggala, a few pre-departure preparations will ensure a smooth trip. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels may accept credit cards, it's essential to carry cash for smaller purchases, markets, and local transport. ATMs are widely available, and currency exchange services can be found at the airport and in commercial areas. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for affordable data and calls. Essential apps to download include a reliable map application, a translation app, and your preferred ride-hailing service. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Manggala, which is in Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. As of current regulations, Philippine citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, typically up to 30 days, for tourism purposes. This allows for a convenient entry without the need for prior visa application. However, it is always recommended to verify the latest visa policies with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as regulations can change. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry.

The process for visa-free entry involves presenting your valid Philippine passport upon arrival at the Indonesian immigration counter. You may be asked to show proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay. While no visa fee is typically charged for this visa-free entry, immigration officers have the discretion to request documentation. It is advisable to have your hotel bookings confirmed, as this can serve as evidence of your accommodation plans during your visit to Manggala and other parts of Indonesia.

While visa-free entry is common for short tourist stays, it is imperative for all travellers to confirm the most up-to-date visa regulations directly with the official immigration authorities of Indonesia or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines. Policies can be subject to change without prior notice. Confirming your entry requirements before booking flights and accommodations is a prudent step to ensure a hassle-free journey. For any specific concerns or if your travel purpose differs from tourism, consulting the embassy is the most reliable course of action.
