Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Manila from various provincial capitals. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the origin city and booking time. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or airport bus to reach Makati, a journey that typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on traffic. Planning to book flight tickets in advance can often secure more economical rates.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, bus travel is a viable and budget-friendly option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao and Pasay, offer routes to Makati. Bus fares typically range from PHP 400 to PHP 800, with travel times varying significantly based on distance and traffic conditions. This mode of transport is ideal for those who prefer a more grounded journey and wish to see more of the countryside.

For those driving from different regions of Luzon, expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) provide direct access to Makati. The journey involves toll fees, which can add up depending on your starting point. Navigating through Metro Manila requires familiarity with the road networks, but GPS navigation apps can greatly assist in reaching your destination smoothly.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati experiences a tropical climate year-round, with two main seasons: the dry season from November to April and the wet season from May to October. The dry season generally offers more pleasant weather for outdoor activities, with lower humidity and less rainfall. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 33°C. This period, especially from December to February, is considered peak tourist season due to the favorable weather and holiday festivities.

The wet season, while characterized by frequent rain showers, can also be a good time to visit if you are looking for fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. The rain is often intermittent, allowing for exploration between downpours. It's advisable to carry an umbrella or raincoat and be prepared for occasional traffic delays caused by heavy rain.

For Filipino travelers seeking a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and February can be particularly appealing. These periods often provide a sweet spot, offering pleasant conditions without the peak season intensity. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Makati offers a dynamic urban experience throughout the year.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to the Philippines is complete without indulging in Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory stew, typically made with chicken or pork, is braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and black peppercorns, often served with rice. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries around Makati, from casual carinderias to more upscale restaurants.

Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, is another Filipino favorite that offers a comforting and flavorful experience. Made with a tamarind base and various meats like pork, beef, or fish, along with an assortment of vegetables, it’s a dish that warms the soul. Many restaurants in Makati offer their own take on this beloved soup, providing a taste of home for many Filipinos.

For a taste of something sweet and refreshing, Halo-Halo is a must-try. This popular dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down on a warm day in the city. Look for stalls and cafes that specialize in this iconic Filipino treat.

Lechon, a whole roasted pig with crispy skin, is a celebratory dish often found at gatherings and special occasions. While a whole lechon might be too much for a solo traveler, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (fried pork belly) or lechon paksiw (pork stewed in liver sauce), which provide a delicious taste of this popular delicacy. Exploring the culinary landscape of Makati offers a journey through the diverse flavors of Filipino cuisine.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a friendly demeanor go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. Understanding and observing these simple customs will enhance your interactions and overall experience in Makati.

When it comes to safety, Makati is generally considered one of the safer cities in Metro Manila, especially in its commercial and business districts. However, like any urban center, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also recommended to use reputable transportation services.

For emergencies, the local police hotline can be reached at 117. Having these numbers readily available can provide peace of mind. Familiarizing yourself with the hotel's location and nearby landmarks will also help you navigate the city more confidently.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are indispensable for convenient and often more affordable transportation compared to traditional taxis. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are crucial for getting around the city. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos.

1. Was asked to pay an additional fee for my son even I already purchased an extra bed. They said an 8yr old is considered an adult as per hotel policy so I will let this slide. 2. Checked in and was given a key card that did not work when we tried to go in to our room! Had to wait for it to be manually unlocked. Worst experience we had. We are tired from all day of fun and just wanted to rest then this happens. 3. The bedroom was so small. When you try to close the door, there is barely enough room for you to squeeze in. The doors are not lapping on the door frame properly which makes it hard to close them. 4. Room is not that clean. Can see dirt on the cabinets and drawers. 5. Pool is nice during the night though and there are a lot of places to eat and a nearby convenience store too. Will not consider to rebook in the future. Would take my money somewhere else.

Location:👍🏻 Near fastfood, convenience store, grocery and events places. Facilities:🤏🏻 Rooms are okay. Pool is small. Room is clean. I just hope they regularly clean or vacuum their curtains. Breakfast:🤏🏻 Food is delicious however they don't offer brewed coffee for free drinks just juice. No options for American breakfast such as toast or pancake. Parking:👎🏻 I am lucky enough to get the last parking available. They just have few slots since there is an ongoing constructions and trucks occupy their parking spaces. Service and crew:👍🏻 All of them are super nice from guards, front desk, cook, housekeeping. One of the reason I will probably consider booking this hotel again is for their staff. Super nice! Management and owner should know. Others: since there is an ongoing construction please expect random noises.

The room is cold (which is very good) and clean. Food is tasty. Unfortunately, pool was closed then due to ash fall. But the welcome drinks tastes good and refreshing. Good internet connection.

The room given to use at first was so close, don’t even have window or view. I requested to be transferred and it was grated but it took long as the room is still being cleaned, take note it’s already 3pm that time. You get what you pay for, nothing special or extravagant in this place.

This accommodation has good location. but they overcharge clients, like for a stain on bed sheets for I have my period. it cost 800. so expensive. paying extra is okay with me but it is really much.

I called them through phone and ask them if the pool is available by the time of our stay and they told me that the pool is under renovation by july 28-31 . And I ask them if the pool is available on aug 3 and they told me that the pool is available from august 1 onwards so I expect that we can use the pool but unfortunately not . I am very disappointed 😡

Poor wifi. Waiters at the bar didn't entertain us so we left. Food needs improvement. Few choices in the Buffet area. No slippers inside the room.

Great experience! We had an early check-in (30 minutes earlier with no additional fee) We enjoy all the amenities and the free breakfast. For the wifi connection, there's a problem in the connection in the morning. Over all, great experience!

It's just the room that I booked should be having a microwave, but it's okay since they upgraded my 2 triple deluxe rooms into suites. Thank you.
